Police chief’s “Orwell” fears

Britain could become a surveilance society

I am glad that people in higher places are at last beginning to see the light about cctv cameras and other snooping devices. Deputy chief constable of Hampshire Ian Readhead said Britain could become a surveillance society with cameras on every street corner.

“I’m really concerned about what happens to the product of these cameras, and what comes next?” he said.

“If it’s in our villages, are we really moving towards an Orwellian situation where cameras are at every street corner?

“And I really don’t think that’s the kind of country that I want to live in.”

What of course is so obvious about the situation, and DCC Readhead will know this, is that the growing amount of cctv cameras do not appear to be able to change people’s behaviour. Muggings, stabbings, murders, thefts, etc continually occur under the watchful eye of camera operators up and down the country. Clearly they are no deterrent and their only use is in making the investigation of these criminal acts that little bit easier for our paper-chasing police forces!

I sincerely hope that any further calls for additional installations of cctv cameras in South Tyneside will be critically questioned!
