David CameronWarning that he will not be changing course

David Cameron is off to Rwanda after a bit of a battering from the press and within the Conservative Party this weekend. He has warned that he is in no mood to move away from the centre ground, despite the the rumblings in the party and threats to call for a vote of no confidence in his leadership, he will address the 1922 backbench committee before the parliamentary recess in an effort to reclaim the moral high ground.

Before leaving on a two-day visit to Rwanda, Mr Cameron told Sky News that those wanting promises of tax cuts and an old-style Right-wing agenda would not force a rethink.

“What we are not going to do is retreat to the comfort zone.”

Mr Cameron will address the Rwandan parliament tomorrow where he will present the findings of a panel set up to advise his party on globalisation and poverty.

The recommendations are not yet Tory policy, Mr Cameron’s aides stress, but they are likely to form key planks of the party’s manifesto.

One hopes that upon his return he won’t be overshocked at the uncomfortable views held by some that perhaps this was not the right time to be in Africa, talking about poverty, whilst Middle England drowns in despair without clean water or electricity and when there appears to be such a poverty of ideas on the formation of the next Conservative manifesto, old fashioned areas such as crime, immigration, tax cuts, and defence seem not to matter these days!
