Promoting tourism opportunities for Arbeia
“Priceless” faux pas by Tyne Wear Museums
It is only two days since I said that
“Good promotion and publicity could be all that is missing”
about attracting a substantial boost in visitor numbers for our Arbeia Roman Fort in South Shields. After complaints expressed at the Beacon and Bents meeting about building projects for the North Marine Park, I passed the opinion that perhaps good marketing might be all that is needed.
We have spent thousand of pounds and man hours in South Tyneside in producing the local area development plan, thousands of more pounds have been expended on consultation exercises (still ongoing), more money is being spent on roadshows – it’s getting like the Mastercard adverts isn’t it!
Some of this money could have been spent on promoting what we already have.
Yet when I walked down King Street, South Shields today, what do I find under the Metro Bridge? A poster from Tyne Wear Museums advertising Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend! Considering that Arbeia Roman Fort is a finer example with a better museum, by far, you have to question which boffin allows this sort of faux pas in South Shields.
Let’s send our visitors away over the river – absolutely priceless!

Spot on Curly. We have an excellent team organising the music events (well done Andy B and co) but very little is seen to promote such events outside South Tyneside. We could become a regional summer music mecca if it was handled properly.
