Frank Zappa and Steve Vai
I’ve never known quite what to make of Steve Vai (or Frank for that matter), Vai is an accomplished “axeman” but his musical style never burned the same chords with me, he just didn’t seem to tick all the boxes unlike those frontmen with a history of the blues running through their fret fingers. Zappa appealed on a different level, with an eclectic song writing ability, irreverent forms and syntax, with an ability to make you smile. Here’s a nine minute clip of the two of them duetting in Rome in 1982, purely musical, a little magical, no big laughs, just two guitarists having a gig!
