Labour Party logoShock announcement due soon

After losing four seats in South Tyneside at last week’s local government elections, including that of former council leader Paul Waggott, the 31 strong Labour group have been meeting to reorganise their leadership and cabinet for the coming municipal year.

Despite suggestions being made in other quarters I do not expect to see any shock announcement over who the new leader of South Tyneside will be, nor do officers or employees of South Tyneside Council. Cllr. Iain Malcolm will become Leader and a “wind of change” will blow through the corridors of South Shields Town Hall, expect to see a far more robust business like approach to the administration of policy.

However, the much touted position of Deputy Leader will not be going to the man I predicted in a spoof betting list back in February. Cllr. Eddie McAtominey is to suffer a major shock and setback in his ambitions and a new name has entered the betting, I am fairly confident that Cllr. Alan Kerr who represents Monkton ward will become the Deputy Leader of the Council, and that a seat in the cabinet will also be offered to the outgoing Mayor Cllr. Tracey Dixon.

More news, just as soon as the Sergeant at Arms has finished his shift!

  1. A summons to both Coun Kerr and Coun Dixon are moves in the right direction. Both have served the Borough with distinction in their Mayoral terms. As for the other representative from Hebburn who is reported to have said that we are receiving value for money from Tesco, then the further away he is from the purse strings of the Council, the better I shall like it. If he thinks that Tesco are giving value to the Borough I wonder what he thinks about all the other financial deals going on at the moment. Away to the Tower!!

  2. [...] Despite the Michael Clare issue being talked about in the highest circles of the council, they’ve stuck with Iain Malcolm as leader, with Alan Kerr as Deputy, as revealed here. [...]
