Withdraw recognition for Zimbabwe
Miliband rejects Conservative demands
South Shields MP and Foreign Secretary David Miliband has rejected Conservative calls for the government to withdraw it’s recognition of the dictatorship government of Sir Robert Mugabe in Harare. One might have thought that the withdrawal of an ambassador and his staff for a period might have given the dictator something to think about as his African friends and allies neighbours decide whether or not they are to defend democracy on their great continent.
However, it must be difficult as Gordon Brown is already dangling a massive cash carrot in front of Mugabe if he agrees to either step aside or guarantee a free and fair election, and how would we cope with British interests without a well staffed embassy in Zimbabwe?
Of course, I have just a little sympathy for the heinous regime in Harare, it must be laughable being spoken down to about democracy and elections from a man who wasn’t even elected leader of the Labour Party and has never been elected Prime Minister. Oh, and what about denying us a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty?
It just isn’t cricket, is it?
