South Tyneside Council ready to consider proposals

Following the announcement that South Tyneside Council intends to rationalise the educational provisions for children and young people with Special Educational Needs, the Select Committee, Children and Young People and Independent and Healthy Lives (that’s a mouthful) will be meeting on Tuesday 15th July at South Shields Town Hall to consider a “scoping report” for the review. Parents and other interested parties should now take the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the report that will be considered by the committee, you can view it here.

If you know people who will be affected by any proposed changes, please print a few copies off and let them have the chance to read through it too. There are benefits to be gained in releasing finances from the current surplus in school places and the council is under pressure to conform to national averages for social and educational inclusion. Therefore it is imperative to be familiar with the arguments and proposals and to formulate any better or different ideas that you may consider more workable or acceptable. It would be a good idea to discuss the proposals now with your ward councillors and teaching staff so that everyone is aware of your views and the fact that you are fully conversant with the current position and the future proposals, by being fully informed you will be in a more advantageous position when the council launches it’s more wider consultations over the next few months.

Such large scale structural changes were always going to be difficult to manage and likely to be the cause of some upset, but by taking your place in the consultative process, fully armed and briefed, you will make the management of these changes far more meaningful, and by engaging fully with your schools, other parents, governors, teaching staff, and members of the council you may well succeed in making the changes that will benefit your children.
