kevin keeganKeegan becomes second Premiership manager to resign this week

Tonight’s statement given via the League Manager’s Association confirming “King Kev’s” resignation as manager at The Toon will disappoint many of their most fervent nutcases supporters, but it was no more than telling us what we already knew or expected. Even as a Sunderland supporter I feel quite saddened and sorrowful at the state of Newcastle United with it’s chaotic management structure. Keegan follows Curbishley as the second Premiership manager to resign this week.

The continental style as exemplified at a number of clubs, including West Ham and Newcastle, is just not suited to the traditional British way of running a football team, a manager must be allowed to control all aspects of the footballing side of the business, and that includes making the decisions on which players to buy and sell, which players to pick for a game, and how to manage, motivate, and discipline his team. Installing someone higher in the managerial chain as a “technical director” with the responsibility for buying and selling “assets” reduces the role of a manager to a mere coach and does not allow that person to shape the development of a squad and achieve it’s potential. The developments that we have seen this week are a sad reflection of the grotesque growth of capital in the higher echelons of the game and the business of football being dictated by speculative entrepreneurs who have little interest other than developing “assets”  and “acquisitions” to produce profits.

It all started going wrong the day that Rupert Murdoch launched a satellite!

Keegan still rates as a complete prat for his foolhardy backing of Joey Barton and doing the Great North Run to South Shields in a 50/50 red and white/black and white shirt! (Did you see that tackle at the weekend?)

  3. I reckon this makes Mr Keegan “unemployable”. This is not the first, nor the second but the THIRD time he has walked away from a job. Who on earth would want to employ a bloke whose lack of commitment to the job in hand is evident for all to see?

  5. He has a shelf life as long as Terry McDermott’s in the current situation.
