Do you trust the govt. with data?
Armed forces now at risk
If ever we needed further evidence that this government cannot be trusted to build databases any larger than those they currently hold then this is it. It’s not as though it’s a few million benefit claimants, or just plain old NI numbers this time, nope, names addresses, service numbers, potential applicants, and even bank accounts have not been ruled out.
Why go to war to make enemies when one blithering idiot at EDS is all you need?
If this hard drive has fallen into the wrong hands (worse case scenario) then lives could well be at risk. Men and women who have put their lives on the line in defence of freedom and democracy could easily be the target for fundamentalist Muslim extremists when they return home, or they could be found to be vulnerable to foreign agents and risk state secrets, the possibilities are endless.
Just remember all of these little stories of how careful and protective govt. departments are with your data when they come around telling you that you must have an ID Card O.K.?

In a word, “no”. I think we should have a kind of “data credit rating” to assess the reliability of data handling. Of course in practice that probably wouldn’t work. Any more than credit ratings for banks lately. But I suspect if it could work the government would have a pretty poor one!
