Market rights discussed
Medieval laws to be looked at
I am pleased to note that the Chief Executive of South Tyneside Council is to have a meeting with Mick Thurlbeck, Chairman of the North East Chamber of Commerce’s Sunderland committee, over their plans to hold markets in Sunderland. The medieval laws that we use to protect our own market in South Shields are an arcane absurdity which has no place in a modern competitive world.
If our market was worth protecting we should be starting by enforcing the agreements we have with market traders to actually stay and trade in our Market Place rather than diddling off at 3:00 pm (or sooner if it suits them.)
If recent visits to our market are anything to go by, it would be better to turn it over to livestock, as they must have done in the 1200s (perhaps someone could drive a couple of hundred asses down here from Sunderland!)
I’m sure there is room for compromise and accommodation here.
