Camp councillors
I like this idea
In an effort to promote democracy and greater participation amongst young first time voters, councillors in Darlington have set up a “boot camp” online where students can fire questions, assess the answers, and then evict the councillors of their choice to find a winner. Using the style of the popular celebrity TV show they have engaged with students in a way that many local authorities fail. It can only be a good thing, especially if it is encouraging thoughtful debate and enquiry, and helping to educate the next generation of electors.
Now if we were able to promote a similar camp in South Tyneside I’d suggest locking a dozen councillors away in a booze free zone in 1950s style scout tents in the middle of winter on Temple Park, South Shields, but who would I invite?
Council Leader Iain Malcolm, Cllr. Emma Lewell and Cllr. Joanne Bell for Labour, all three Tory councillors David Potts, Jeff Milburn and Donald Woods, all three Lib-Dem councillors Joe Abbott, John McKie, and Joe Atkinson, and three from the Independents and Progressives, hmmm…..Jane Branley, Ahmed Khan, and Lawrence Nolan.
Who would be the first to be evicted I wonder? Who would the survivors be? I’ll leave it up to you to decide, or would you prefer to send someone else out into the cold?
