The tax cutting agenda

David CameronLib-Dems take the lead.

It’s embarrassing frankly when the party that gave us Joe Abbott, John McKie, and Joe Atkinson here on South Tyneside have taken the lead in calling for a tax cutting agenda to help hard working families spend our way out of recession. Yes you heard me right, the Lib-Dems are the party proposing tax cuts these days.

Clegg and Cable are pulling the rug from under the Tories feet, if indeed they have a rug of their own to stand on. The Conservative’s position on personal taxation is getting more and more confused as Gordon Brown eats into the lead they enjoyed in the polls all of this year. Peter Hoskin at The Spectator is highlighting the same confusion over taxation and wondering whether George Osborne truly can answer the bigger questions.

Time is running out for the Tories, the election may just come sooner than they expect (that’s if Gordon Brown can summon up some courage), but as has been fairly obvious during the weeks of the banking crisis, neither Cameron or Osborne had any new initiatives to offer, or counter against the Brown/Darling bail outs, even now they are asking CCHQ to dress up old policies as new.

Iain Martin at Three Line Whip said:

“The Conservatives, surely, still believe that individuals are generally better at spending their money than the state, even in a downturn? Do they? And if they don’t, voters might be tempted to ask what the point of the Tories is.”

The trouble is, we voters know that it is time for belt tightening by government (if this government knows how), we know cash is short, and we expect the government of the day to do it’s bit by taking it’s hand out of our pocket! We know that if we had a little more cash we would probably spend it wisely because the banks are reluctant to extend loans these days. We know that a slimmer pared down government would be more efficient and cost us less, in short we know that the spending spree has to come to an end and that it is impossible to share the proceeds of recession.

So, why are the Conservative Party failing to offer what is sorely needed? Why are they trying hard to stick to Labour’s spending plans? Why are they handing over traditional philosophical and idealogical ground to the Joe Abbotts of this world.
