Tea and biscuits
Should we fund councillors’ refreshments?
I was interested by this article in the Northern Echo which reveals that South Tyneside Council spent £25,503 on tea and biscuits and other snacks between April 2007 and May of last year.
Susie Squire, from the Taxpayers’ Alliance campaign group, said: “It is wrong that taxpayers, who are already struggling in the credit crunch, have to foot this kind of bill.
“This is a sky-high cost for such everyday items, and those at the council should buy their own tea and biscuits, just like everyone else does.”
What do you think?
Should we continue to finance the crackers ate by some ginger nuts, or should they stick their hands in their own pockets just as they do in Hartlepool, Stockton and Darlington?
I don’t mind the 5000 odd visitors to South Shields Town Hall having a free cuppa.

I am keen to see people visit our lovely Town Hall and would not grudge them a cup of tea and a biscuit. When the new Mayoress has her ‘at home’ they push the boat out and have cakes. As this event is open to anyone in the borough it would be churlish not to offer guests some refreshments.

How do you feel about elected councillors having to buy tea or coffee every time they visit the Town Hall?
