Save the planet- eat tofu!
Sunday roast off the menu
Will these people ever give up? Do they want us to exist on a diet of tofu and Linda McCartney’s sausages?
Give up lamb roasts and save the planet. Government advisers are developing menus to combat climate change by cutting out “high carbon” food such as meat from sheep, whose burping poses a serious threat to the environment.
Out will go kebabs, greenhouse tomatoes and alcohol. Instead, diners will be encouraged to consume more potatoes and seasonal vegetables, as well as pork and chicken, which generate fewer carbon emissions.
“Changing our lifestyles, including our diets, is going to be one of the crucial elements in cutting carbon emissions,” said David Kennedy, chief executive of the Committee on Climate Change.
They’ve actually spent tax payers’ money to find out how much methane and CO2 is farted and belched out of the backsides of lambs, and how much CO2 tomatoes and potatoes are pumping into the atmosphere!
I am fed up to the back teeth of people telling me what I should or should not eat, fed up of schools which no longer participate in competitive sporting leagues telling parents what they can or cannot put in “Junior’s” lunch box, whilst at the same time promoting the better eating diet of Jimmy Foreman the champion of dinner ladies all around South Tyneside. I’m fed up of being told what is and what is not good for us, I’m big enough to choose for myself thank you!
Oh, and by the way, the less healthy options such as Coca Cola and Cadbury’s chocolate seem to produce the smallest carbon footprints – go figure!

There is an environmental and social cost to eating meat that probably isn’t reflected accurately in terms of its financial cost – am I’m not referring to sheep burping or whatever.
Eating less meat is better from a health point of view (the human body was never “designed” to eat the quantity of meat – especially cheap processed meat – that we do on a dauily basis), from a social point of view (less pressure on developing countries to rear cheap meat for us in the west) and from an environmental point of view (rearing, slaughtering and transporting meat is a hugely inefficient use of grain, land and water – not to mention the carbon cost of that animal its processing to consumption).
I fear by picking out tofu and what-not you’re taking a strawman approach. From what I’ve read no one is “forcing” you to do anything, however the recommendation that you eat less meat is a sound one.

@peter – at the moment, noone is ‘forcing’ you to eat less meat. But this government has hardly held back in forcing other forms of behaviour they (or their advisors) deem ‘appropriate’ on the populace have they? Smoking, ASBOs, CCTV, ID cards etc.
Fortunately, they won’t be in power for much longer, and because of how they have behaved over the last 12 years, I think (fervently hope!) that we have seen the end of Labour as a political force. Good riddance.
There may well be positive health benefits to eating less meat, and your arguments may well hold water, but, at least for me, the environmental movement has turned into something rather repulsive with their anti-progress and anti-life messages.

‘These people’? Forty percent of most Western populations are actually vegetarian; no-one is forcing them or you to be conscious beings instead of thoughtless killers.
Tofu, of course, is toxic – but meat is unnecessary slaughter. You should see what your hoofed and horned beasts actually DO to the planet! I live surrounded by them, and the destructive excesses of those who sell them to you. If you saw what went into your ‘meat’ you probably wouldn’t eat it.
Good luck up there at the top of the toxic food chain – you’ll need it!
