South Tyneside Independent Alliance councillor wants to be our MP
Plain old Victor Thompson to stand in General Election
I have to say that this has come as a bit of a surprise to me, if I was asked two months ago to predict which of the South Tyneside Independent Alliance councillors wanted to have a tilt at Westminster I would plumped for Ahmed Khan or Allen Branley, because one has the money and the other has the ego!
However on 8th. April the Independent Alliance announced on their website that they would not be fielding candidates in the General Election, so having looked at the official Statement of Nominated Persons for the South Shields constituency I was even more taken aback to see that (a) Cllr. Vic Thompson has been nominated, and (b) he has no official “description” against his name. i.e. No official party, neither Tory, Socialist, Nationalist, Environmentalist, Raving Mad Loony, South Shields man, or anything at all. He’s just plain old Victor Thompson!
This begs a few questions:
- Why has he decided to throw his lot in with South Tyneside Council and not seek re-election in the Westoe ward (the Alliance Independent candidate there is Jane Branley’s brother Paul McVay)?
- Why does he want to represent me as my MP in Westminster?
- What qualities, experiences, and achievements could he bring to the role?
- Would he be a more vociferous voice for me in Westminster than he was for the folks of Westoe?
- Why has he decided not to make use of a “description”?
- Why did the South Tyneside Independent Alliance draw back from their earlier thoughts of fighting the General Election?
- Is Vic Thompson comfortable and at ease with recent Independent Alliance electoral decisions?
I shall be putting these questions to him by email and publishing his response as soon as I have it.

I wonder why he didn’t ask any of the Indy Alliance to sign his nomination papers?
