Detention without charge should be resisted at all costs.

Is the real Mr. Brown now standing up?

What no-one has explained to me is what makes the police more effective if a suspect is held for 56 days without charge, compared to 28 days? How difficult is it to come up with a charge?
I assume that in the case of the Glasgow airport bombers charges will take less than 28 days, as they were caught ‘in the act’.
My worry with all of this is that opponents to a Government can be locked up for a period of time on the grounds of suspicion of terrorism (eg during Labour conferences). These measures will not effectively stop terrorists, but they might well be used to stifle free speech, Government opposition etc. There are alarming parallels in recent European history, (Germany) where measures put in place to protect the population were used to bring about dictatorship. I’m not saying Gordon Brown has this in mind, but who’s to say in 20 years someone less scrupulous does?
The idea of detention without charge should be resisted at all costs, as this is a fundamental freedom of ours!

Didn’t Brown state recently that terrorists should not be allowed to alter the British way of life?
