Brown in a further attack on our freedoms

passportRight to travel under threat

The Stalinist tendency in Labour’s bones has surfaced again with a hidden clause in the Child Maintenance Bill, which somehow passed me by last week. A proposal in the Bill would allow civil servants to prevent errant fathers who refuse to support their children from travelling abroad.

Excuse me? But since when have we ever agreed to allow a bunch of pen-pushing, paper-shuffling, bureaucratic bunglers to invest themselves with so much power without reference to a court of law? Have they gone completely mad?

The power to remove one’s passport is an extremely powerful weapon that should be used only with extreme caution, even a suspected terrorist is afforded the right of a judicial review and the due process of the law. Lawyers and judges have attacked the proposal which is a direct threat to one of our most basic liberties they warn the government not to use reform of prerogative powers as an excuse to force through a “serious” curtailment of long-standing freedoms. They warn that it could set a dangerous precedent, and say in a House of Lords report: “The freedom to travel to and from one’s country is a right of great significance and should only be curtailed after a rigorous decision process .

Lord Oakeshott of Seagrove Bay, the Liberal Democrat work and pensions spokesman, said: “We can’t have civil servants taking people’s passports away. That’s the way to an Asbo state.”

We have had ten years and more of gradual erosions of citizen’s rights under the NuLabour way, it’s time their draconian dictats were reigned in!
