Karen Allen for South Shields

with 10 comments

karen allanDecember predictions were right

South Shields Conservative Association have announced that Karen Allen has been chosen to fight against the town’s MP and Foreign Secretary David Miliband at the next general election. Karen is a South Shields girl who graduated in English Literature at Queen Mary University in 2001, she has since been living and working in London and her parents continue to live in South Shields.  She is currently employed as a Director at Tower Perrin, a global reinsurance brokerage, where she specialises in North American Casualty business. She has served on the Conservative Future National Management Executive and the Conservative Way Forward Executive.

Although there is no news yet on the South Shields Conservative’s website I am glad to see that they have chosen a candidate with strong local connections and local knowledge, I’m sure that Karen will enjoy the experience of fighting her first genearl election in South Shields and cutting her teeth in her home town in what will be a tough and hard campaign to unseat the Foreign Secretary installed here by Tony Blair.

When I last contacted Karen she was careful in her comments about getting the nomination here, understandably, because the vacancy had not yet been advertised at Conservative Central HQ, but she will now be looking forward to spending more time back with the folks ‘o’ Shields (and her parents) working hard to offer a viable alternative for those who habitually throw their vote to Labour without much thought. Karen tells me that she feels very privileged and excited about the nomination following yesterday’s meeting and she is ready to roll up her sleeves in readiness for the hard work that lies ahead.

This nomination is very much as predicted by local bloggers back in December, particularly Rossinisbird.

The last South Shields Conservative candidates to eventually find a seat in the House of Commons were Michael Fabricant and Mark Hoban who were successfully elected in 1997.

  1. I also think Mark Hoban has and Joanna Gardner is The Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea for 2008-09

  2. Any truth that they overlooked an even stronger local candidate in Jeff Milburn?

  4. “she has since been living and working in London”
That’s odd! In the letters page of the Gazette she claims to live in the Kingsway, South Shields. Which is the truthful account?

  5. Mr Milburn may have been a strong candidate by ST Council standards but perhaps we could allow ourselves to aim higher.

  6. Which address does Mr Miliband claim to live at?He must have several doubles-has numerous photos taken by Gazette when he does deign to appear in Shields-then these appear one by one giving impression he is in constituency when in fact he is abroad on FO business(btw perhaps he should go abroad less as he seems to cause great offence when he does)

  7. @Iain Malcolm

Perhaps you ought to be asking a member of the party, but the way I prefer to see it is they have gone for youth, ambition, and presentational skills, as well as local connections.

I think Karen is a first class choice who will prove to be hard working candidate capable of much improving the Tory vote in South Shields.

    @Bryan

Yes we know she lives and works in London, but is there some sort of crime in writing from your parent’s address when you spend the weekends here? Would you not do the same when you are frequently resident in your home town?

    • But surely this is how one expects general elections to run in this country? It’s only the winning candidate who gets to be seen again, briefly.

The last truly local Conservative candidate was Stan Smith and that was many years ago.

  9. Do you know her Curly, are you in regular touch with her? Does she come here to read.

Im sure she will be excited to fight Miliband and I wish her well, shes a Shields lass at the end of the day. Whats wrong with showing a bit of ambition, and who cares where she works, loads of Shield people have moved away for work.

I see the Hoons at the Mr Monkey blog have started having a go already, what a bunch of saddos Shaw and his Indy mates are, will they be sticking a candidate up to fight for less dog poo in Shields then?
