Labour councillor defects to Conservatives

Wirral councillorsNot here of course, but over there

You probably thought I was talking about a South Tyneside councillor didn’t you?

Well I’m not, I’m reporting this defection because for some odd reason I have a group of regular readers in the Wirral where a long-serving Labour councillor, who was also an aide to Exchequer Secretary and Wallasey MP Angela Eagle, crossed the floor at last night’s full council meeting and joined the Conservatives. Cllr Denis Knowles – pictured here (centre) with Tory group leader Cllr Jeff Green and Wallasey’s Conservative PPC, Leah Fraser – represented the last Labour-held ward in the Wallasey constituency.

In announcing his decision in a speech at the meeting, he cited the ego of the council’s Labour leader and the plans by the Labour/Lib Dem-controlled council to close libraries and leisure centres.

He said that he was now “ashamed of Labour” and that his former party had “undermined local democracy and created bitterness”. His full speech is reproduced on the Wirral Globe website.

The Conservatives have had a long term plan for many years in the Wirral which is now paying rich dividends with two hard working female PPCs heavily involved, they are on the verge of bigger things. Although we live in the midst of a staunch Labour heartland here in South Shields and Jarrow I sense that things are at last on the move in our local Conservative Associations with a gradual increase in membership of younger people and another good female candidate in Karen Allen taking the fight to Labour. The big question is – will they kick on after the election?
