esther rantzenI’m a celebrity get me in here!

So we face the prospect of another reality TV star wanting to get into the jungle of the House of Commons, as she contemplates running against the discredited Labour MP Margaret Moran in Luton. One really needs to ask the question “do we actually need people who have lived their lives off the back of the TV licence fee to clean up politics, or should the onus be on politicians to deliver their own salvation?”

I’m not knocking her ambition, nor saying that she should not try, but she needs to consider the possible outcomes.

In all probability Moran will be kicked out by her own electorate in any case as she defends a slim majority, Rantzen’s possible inclusion on the ballot paper could even split the opposition vote and allow the greedy MP back into the House of Commons in an absolute travesty of justice. Sorry Esther, but calling on Martin Bell for assistance is no answer to the nation’s problems, he hardly managed to change a single thing when he was temporarily an MP, and the other TV star (ex Labour MP) Robert Kilroy Silk bombed disastrously in Europe. There is little point in electing MPs on a single issue basis, their job is all encompassing on a very wide range of issues that are likely to affect constituents, is Esther skilled in negotiating with the rule makers at the DWP in arguing the case of an unemployed couple with children fighting for benefits or representing the case of her local council in planning battles with Whitehall?

Not likely.

Then what happens if she was elected? You can guarantee that a traditional party backed candidate would take over again at the next election.

  1. If the constituents of Luton South in their wisdom re-elect Moran to serve another term, then this country is truly lost.
