“I don’t claim a penny in expenses. I am the only councillor in the borough with a 100 per cent attendance record, and the only councillor who refused to take a pay rise this year.”

South Tyneside Independent Alliance councillor Ahmed Khan in yesterday’s Shields Gazette

Don’t you find this just a little disingenuous and hard to swallow?

Let’s start by looking at the table of expenses and allowances for our South Tyneside councillors.

“the only councillor who refused to take a pay rise this year” Hmm, hmmm, hmmmm, could that be because last year and the year before, he was not a councillor at all? He started off with nowt, along with Gordon Finch, John Hodgson, Ann Walsh, and Geraldine White,(who were also newly elected in May 2008) and carried on claiming nowt – that is until September 2008 when he awarded himself a rise from nowt to £2833, before adding to it in the subsequent months. For some reason, known only unto himself, he decided to break a long standing pledge NOT to claim ANY expenses OR allowances, as  detailed in his leaflets and newsletters linked to in the above post. His claims are now at the same level as those others elected on the same day last year.

As I said back on 10th. May, I have no axe to grind in general with councillors who do claim allowances, so long as they are transparent and accountable, that’s fine by me. I do have a VERY BIG ISSUE with politicians who say one thing, yet do another. When a politician (and that’s what Cllr. Khan is now) makes promises and pledges, repeatedly, then the electorate has good reason to expect that politician to honour those pledges. Failure to be honest and keep to your pledges, without first informing people that you intend to change your direction marks you as good as those MPs who keep telling us “that it was all within the rules”, does it not?

If a Conservative MP is forced by David Cameron to stand down over a £1645 “duck island” then what should we expect a South Shields councillor to do who has broken his solemn promises to the tune of over £6411?

Resign now, or pledge not to seek re-election – what would you do?

I would love to hear Cllr. Khan’s view again, the comments are open if he wishes to add to what he has already told the Gazette.  Perhaps he’d like to answer this question too – “If elected to the European Parliament would you pledge not to claim any expenses or allowance in addition to the parliamentary salary, or would you fill your boots in the buffet car of the big EU gravy train?”
