South Tyneside Council to develop and secure Riverside regeneration

Whilst recognising the importance of pressing ahead with this vital project to redevelop the riverside in South Shields, I have one major hope and concern over how the council develops and builds the planned multi-million pound ‘Centre of Excellence’, which it intends to rent to BT.

Location, location, location, – the placement and design of the building must be such that it does NOT interfere with the views of the River Tyne which have been opened up in recent years, the vista that greets us from Station Road, Coronation Street, Ferry Street, and Church Way is a symbolic reflection of our historic links to the river which has given life and sustenance to this community for centuries and predates the Roman invasion. It would be almost criminal to once again hide that view behind some ill designed building for bureaucrats.

Let’s hope for some real vision and excellence in the planning of this development.
