Prince of Darkness holds Brown’s strings

with one comment

Lord Mandelson to control PM like a Regent.

Lord Mandelson of Foy in the county of Herefordshire and Hartlepool in the county of Durham, First Secretary of State and Lord President of the Council, (Lord High Everything) apparently wanted the title Deputy Prime Minister in Friday’s reshuffle but according to Tory Bear this might have led to Harriet Harperson’s resignation along with all of the others, as the student blogger acknowledges that Brown was unable to move Alastair Darling away from the Treasury, unable to make the apoplectic Ed Balls Chancellor, and unable to move David Miliband from the Foreign Office. The Prime Minister’s weaknesses were cruelly exposed by the Cabinet almost reshuffling itself.

Amongst the batch of emails received by Guido Fawkes relating to Downing Street’s spin masters McBride and Draper as an exchange between Lord Mandelson and the former LabourList editor written before Gordon Brown brought the Blairite “Prince of Darkness” back into the government. The Sunday Times alleges today that Guido has sold the emails to another newspaper and the contents have been published in The Mail on Sunday, Mandelson having spent the last couple of days shoring up Brown’s reputation as the man best suited for the job must be dismayed that his revelations about Prime Minister are now public knowledge. He’s not actually good hupoured at all but an angry insecure man who watches X Factor instead of making the big strategic decisions, and that it was “absurd” to label him as couragious. But most of us knew this anyway.

By virtue of his Lord High Everything position Mandelson is now effectively in control of the Prime Minister’s destiny, Brown now exists purely as Mandy’s plaything to use or abuse at will, Ed Balls has been firmly put in place and the Blairite’s attempts to destabilise or supplant Brown temporarily put on hold. Lord Mandelson knows that Labour will lose the next election and will now be involved in what can only be politically described as damage limitation whilst preparing the ground for a leader in opposition. Yes he can certainly appear to be loyal to Brown now and is no sycophant, he controls the rage and anger of the Blairites but fears an early election just as much as the Prime Minister, he will now become Labour’s Regent and chief strategist looking to play the long game, but Brown will be fully aware that Mandelson will have the ability and influence, if things continue to go disastrously wrong, to pull the plug on his Premiership at any time that he chooses.

Essentially the Prime Minister has been so weakened by the events of the last few days, and the EU election results are sure to do more damage to his reputation, that he cannot even control the timing of the next election, he is now effectively dancing to Mandy’s tune like a puppet on a string. Mandelson will decide, and Labour will probably go into that election with Alan Johnson at it’s head, the Tories are already planning for that scenario.
