Iain Malcolm“We have less than twelve months to turn the situation around or we will lose the next general election”

This just in from Cllr. Iain Malcolm, Labour’s leader of South Tyneside District Council:

It was a truly awful night for the Labour party across the country. It is clear our core vote simply didn’t turn out and we have less than twelve months to turn the situation around or we will lose the next general election. If the economy can be turned around and if we are able to offer a radical platform for a fourth term, and if the media turn their attention on the Tories having absolutely no policies that would benefit this country – then I am confident we can still win.
The election of two BNP members to the European Parliament is a blot on our democracy. We need to re-engage with those who feel disenfranchised by the main stream parties, address their concerns and expose the racist BNP for the thugs they are. They have nothing to offer our country.

I wish to place on record the Labour Party’s thanks to the voters of South Tyneside for their support last Thursday.

No indication in his statement about whether or not the situation can be turned around under Brown’s leadership or if someone else ought to be at the helm, but his reading of the situation is pretty succinct as far as Labour is concerned. I endorse his comments about the BNP, all of the major parties need to re-engage with communities and address issues on the ground taking full heed of the messages they hear, exposing the BNP’s political, racist, protectionist, anti-free trade, and hate filled agenda will go a long way to dealing with people’s misconceptions and provided a more sensible way for people to register a protest vote.
