Cllr. Khan’s public response (so far)

cllr. ahmed khanSouth Tyneside Independent councillor shows no sign of contrition over expenses row

The expenses row that originally brewed up here has spilled over into the public pages of  The Shields Gazette when two whole pages of readers’ letters were published yesterday evening, it’s not quite on the same seismic scale as the Parliamentary furore but it is an indication of how people in South Shields feel about politicians who make claims and commitments in the years running up to elections and then thumb their noses at the public once they have achieved their aim of sitting on the local council.

South Tyneside Independent Alliance councillor Ahmed Khan was caught with his trousers down after promising to never claim allowances or expenses, on more than one occasion, and despite making a number of offers to give him some space on this blog to rebut the criticisms he has chosen to side step or try to ignore them. That escape route was closed off last night after a torrent of letters appeared in the local newspaper, here is a selection:

The balance was not in his favour

Cllr. Khan has made his responses on his Twitter page, and despite the growing public outcry over his decisions to renege on past promises, he shows absolutely no sign of contrition, remorse, or shame over his actions.

Readers will notice the flippant and shallow manner in which he deals with this outpouring of public consternation, perhaps he hasn’t realised that the drug dealers made no claims to clean up politics, and that we pretty much get “what it says on the tin” with a drug dealer, with a politician there’s always a little more of a risk that they don’t mean a word of what they tell us to get them elected!

Here we see the usual response wrapped in a veiled threat, now he suggests the Press Complaints Commission be used as a blunt weapon. I might point out here that my letter to the Gazette was also edited, I presume for the sake of brevity (I have a habit of rambling on a bit) it’s what one ought to expect when there is a premium on news space.

Well at least we can be thankful that Cllr. Khan hasn’t trotted out the lame words that we’ve become so used to over the past month or so “it was all within the rules”, but one might have hoped for a little humility in his responses, a sense of contrition, and an apology to those who elected him. I’ve stated here before that I have no objections to councillors who claim their allowances, so long as the process is open, transparent, and honest, then I don’t see a problem, the system is there to defray the costs of those who might otherwise decide not to become engaged in the political process, and that may result in the loss of some talented local representatives. However, the voting public find it slightly offensive and grossly hypocritical , to see politicians making a firm and principled stand one minute and then reneging on it the next!

Come on Cllr. Khan, hold your hands up, say sorry and admit you made the wrong call. After all it was our taxes that you promised to save.

  1. Curly I’ve just been to Mr Monkeys blog to comment about this and Ive tried to leave a few comments but as soon as Id typed them some were shown, but anything with Khan’s name in it was deleted/censored/not shown. What do you think is going on there then? Either he’s protecting Khan or Khan is the Monkey at the keyboard while I type my comments. Honest every time I put his name in, nowt appeared. What do you think?

His twit page is full of Mr bitter and twisted today as well, trying to shut down the Gazette on his own daft bugger.
