Do not undermine the Mayor

with one comment

A call for respect and obedience

I am concerned with local matters in South Tyneside today and the reconvened meeting of South Tyneside Borough Council which will take place in South Shields Town Hall this afternoon.
I hope that the Mayor will make it perfectly clear to councillors before the meeting starts that the Standing Orders must be respected and adhered to and that those who fail to do so should remove themselves from the council chamber, it is only fair that those who wish to expedite the business of the borough should be able to continue to debate and decide without unfair interruption.

The office of Mayor carries heavy responsibilities and regardless of the person who is entrusted with that office, it demands respect and recognition of the authority of the Chair. Whenever the Mayor is on his/her feet, members must sit down and shut up – simple as. Whenever the Mayor makes an advised ruling then members must respect that ruling, the Mayor is not responsible for the writing of the rules, members are responsible, and therefore they ought to be able to police their own rules as responsible representative adults.

The office of Mayor is representative of the people of the borough of South Tyneside, therefore by logical extension, if you show disrespect to the Mayor and the authority of the Chair, then you are effectively showing disrespect to, and undermining,  the electoral authority of the people of the borough. The Mayor is representative of all of us.

I call upon all South Tyneside councillors to remember this.

We could do without any further drama today.

  1. Goodness only knows what the public must think of that chamber and the actions of certain councillors.

The chamber is a place for reasoned debate, not petty personal attacks. The Conservatives know and respect this, alas there are some others who don’t care about rules and procedure.
