Ronnie Biggs – should we show compassion?

ronnie biggsCriticism of Jack Straw

The Justice Secretary Jack Straw has decided that the 1960s Great Train robber 79 year old Ronnie Biggs should remain in prison to serve his sentence. This, despite the fact that he is a very old man who is unable to walk, talk or feed himself and has suffered two strokes and three brain haemorrhages. Gary Elsby who loves to start a debate, thinks that Straw has got it all wrong, and that Biggs (who never did like prison) should be released on compassionate grounds, so he’s put his argument in a post on LabourList.

Now I’m a fairly libertarian sort of guy,  conservative in viewpoint with a reasonably liberal social conscience, but if I were behind Jack Straw’s desk I’d be quite happy for the taxpayer to continue paying for Biggs’ accommodation and health treatment inside one of Her Majesty’s Prisons. Having escaped from “the Scrubs” in 1965 he sunned himself in Australia, Panama, and Brazil before the ravages of old age and ill health took their toll, only then did he contemplate coming back to the UK to avail himself of some free NHS treatment, in fact he has hardly even served sufficient of his sentence to be considered for parole!

If the state showed him compassion now, then surely it would set a worrying precedent which might allow all sorts of murderers and thugs to be released onto the streets (something which this government manages without even thinking about). Keep him locked up for at least another seven years say I, and then let a parole board review things (if he’s still alive), he hasn’t even showed the slightest remorse for his crime and cannot be said to be a man governed by the consequences of his own acts.

Gary Elsby is obviously going through a “celebrity phase”, what do you say?

  1. If only Straw showed the same ‘compassion’ to Pinochet when he had the chance. Perhaps Thatcher should intercede to free another criminal?

  2. […] Curly ponders whether we should show some compassion to Ronnie […]

    • Everyone knows who Ronnie Biggs is. He’s famous, his books have been sold by national booksellers to their shame. He’s used this country, and others to escape justice.

Who remembers the name of the train driver who was bludgoned senseless by these people, and lived a few short years after the event, a broken man ?

Compassion. Really ? I do not believe it.
