The Branley leaflets

with 12 comments

Allen Branley’s newsletters

I’m publishing these for the sake of balance, it is only fair that people have a chance to read all sides of the arguments for the forthcoming by election in the Westoe ward of South Shields. Incredibly a commenter and supporter of the Independents, a MR DE MATAS, in this post, has the audacity to say that I’m an utter liar! The suggestion is that I ripped up the leaflets in front of the distributors, I suppose that I’m expected to just take this sort of drivel on the chin, however, if I knew who the commenter was they’d be receiving a sharply worded letter from my London lawyers, how very dare he/she!

The leaflets were screwed up tight and rolled into thin “sausage shapes” before being pushed through my letterbox, they’ve been straightened as best as possible without being ripped and I hope you can read enough of them to be able to get the gist of the message. If anyone would care to offer me some pristine copies I’ll happily upload them to Scribd as .pdfs (as usual you can find my details on the contact page).

Sorry about the quality of the scans, it’s the best that I could manage under the circumstances.

You will note that Mr. Branley is suggesting that there are unnecessary and wasteful council meetings, and that more meetings should be held in the evenings to allow working people a better chance to attend. Mr. Branley was removed from South Tyneside Council on two occasions for failure to attend meetings and represent his constituents. He would also like to see more non councillors co-opted onto council committees whilst at the same time arguing for greater accountability, and he’s also looking for practical working relationships with councillors from other parties (hasn’t the Alliance already tried this and failed miserably?).

He claims that the Independent Alliance proposed a prudent alternative budget for South Tyneside Council and at the same time states that it would be foolish to make rash promises about council tax rates. I’m not sure which year or which budget he is talking about, it certainly cannot be this year’s.

On councillor’s allowances the claim once more goes out that Mr. and Mrs. Branley have cost us nothing at all, which is fine, all well and good if you would like all of your councillors to be multi millionaires. In the real world councillors come in all shapes and sizes and from differing backgrounds it would be unfair to regress to the Victorian age of social benevolence when only the rich could be viewed as suitable enough to represent us.

Have a look at the leaflets and ask yourself is Mr. Branley, the dentist and property developer, really doing the right thing by asking the people of Westoe to re-elect him despite twice being thrown off South Tyneside Council for non attendance at meetings?

Why not ask your local Independent councillor why they haven’t insisted upon a new candidate for the Westoe ward in South Shields.

The distribution company who are delivering the leaflets in South Shields have kindly supplied new copies, you will find these much easier to read:

  2. Have you ever read the comments of the Independent Alliance Supporters on the Mr. Monkey blog? Slandering individuals indeed?

My point of view is that a man who cannot be bothered to go to council meetings is not fit to represent his people on the council, what is the counter argument?

Err, and it is not codswallop, I have described exactly how the leaflets arrived on my door mat.

ps I cannot get an answer on your phone please email me privately.

  4. Judging by the amount of money the mysterious De Matas is offering for uncreased deliveries of leaflets he too must be a wealthy man.

  6. It would be interesting to know if, during Mr Branley’s 1994 term of office as councillor when he was far less affluent, he did or did not claim expenses.

  7. I would like to voice my appreciation to the distribution company for ensuring that pristine copies of the leaflets were sent to me in record time this morning, well done for that. However, I am still not happy at the suggestion that I crumpled the originals myself, regular readers will know that I have a high interest in our local politicians and like to give my readers the opportunity to read their newsletters. This certainly wouldn’t be possibly if I screwed the leaflets up. So an apology would be most welcome (particularly as I have been accused of being an utter liar and talking codswallop).

I’m going to eat now and will put the good copies of the Branley leaflet on site when I return.

  8. mr curly i said utter lies i think ,
i do retract if i called you personally.
but in my opinion, the statement you wrote is not the
truth,in yours we screwed and rolled and twisted
i feel i can live with that , can you?.

  9. Curly, it seems like six of one and half a dozen of the other here.

    Don’t forget you said:

“Clearly whoever is delivering his leaflets doesn’t want his message to get out…These were plainly intended to see the inside of the dust bin…It makes you feel as though my leaflets were given special attention.”

A pretty clear implication, unintended or not, that the ‘scrunching’ was done on purpose. Surely if someone didn’t want you to read it, they’d just skip your letterbox out, rather than making it into a sausage shape and pushing it through?

This is one of the most interesting and engaging elections for while, which has everyone talking, yet we’ve ended up with a truly bizarre debate on what state a leaflet was in when it landed on your doormat!

    July 29, 2009 at 7:17 pm

  10. just to comment on the leaflets that were allegedly put through your door in the state you said. In my opinion this is totally untrue and will always stand by my employees whom insist this also wasnt the case and all of the neighbours of yours that i checked this morning said that their leaflets were delivered in a perfect state.

  11. David you are perfectly right, I’m allowing a silly distraction to get in the way of the main message. The apologies are accepted.
    Time to move on.

  12. I also have no political insight but the leaflets do make reading a little interesting on what goes on
