Bents Park Free Concert

South Shields heaving packed with visitors

OK, so they weren’t the biggest acts in the world but they were entertaining and they were free, the weather was warm and sunny and South Shields said hello to one of the largest crowds that must have ever been assembled in the Bents Park today. By my own conservative estimation, there must have been at least twenty thousand in the park to see the remnants of S Club 7 and the top Abba tribute band Bjorn Again, the beaches were busy too, as was the South Marine Park, and the sea front pubs and amusement park.

It is on days like this that you ask – what do we do to hang on to them just a little bit longer?

There is no doubt that our local economy can receive a substantial, if short, boost from these influxes of visitors and that we need to maximise our opportunities and look to find ways of tempting people to stay here for long week-end breaks or short stay holidays. If we want to prosper we cannot turn away the lure of commercial development year after year.

Hotel plans may be on the back burner for now, but please don’t leave them at the back of your mind for too long!
