A developing question

Where do the Independents wish to improve South Shields?

Over the past few years the small but vociferous Alliance Independent group of councillors on South Tyneside council have given the appearance (even unwittingly) of being Luddite in their approach to development and regeneration in South Shields. They were in the vanguard and led the protests about the proposed hotel development at the Gypsies Green site and joined up with environmentalists to take their petition around the borough, they were at the forefront of a campaign to protect Temple Memorial Park when a new school building was proposed (something which I too supported them in), they attempted to blight all development in the sea front area by proposing a town or village green plan for there too, they protested strongly about new developments for the North Marine Park and the Arbeia Roman Fort, and were vocal in their protests about the CJ Garland’s call centre at Market Dock. They have been less than willing to voice support for a proposed swimming pool at the sea front and even now continue to ask questions about the so called “golden triangle” development opportunity at meetings of South Tyneside Council, and they were less than excited and enthusiastic about the sale of Bolingbrook Hall to become the new Register Office.

They were rightly opposed to green land development at Fellgate and are fighting against a waste recycling facility within South Tyneside’s borders.

Can I publicly ask their leadership to make it plain to the electors of South Shields and South Tyneside the areas which they believe are right and ripe for redevelopment and regeneration? Where do they see the next great environmental changes and improvements to our town that will help to regenerate our local economy?

I think we have a right to know their thoughts on these matters.

  2. When will the people of the town wake up to what the Independent alliance are up to,surely there has to be a conflict of interest by ex coun Branley and his wife in their opposition to the hotel development at Gypsy Green.

  3. As a resident living near the Branleys, the Alliance has knocked on my door 4 times over the last 6 weeks, and they have always explained their agenda with regards to the Borough. The following question has therefore crossed my mind Curly;

    “Why would anybody who has anything to do with the Independent Alliance take the time to answer your question?”

    Over the last four months you have pursued a personal, singular, orientated vendetta against Councillor Ahmed Khan, and have also knocked the Branley’s from pillar to post.

    In the middle of an election campaign, do you honestly think they will therefore take the time to address your question, especially when at least 100,000 leaflets have been sent around the Borough under the Independent banner?

    Over this period you have also attacked Mr Branley for his lack of attention to Council meetings. You have failed in your public duty to question the lack of attendance at local CAF meetings associated with your friend Councillor David Potts. I have no time for the vindictiveness of Mr Monkey, but his comments are true, David Potts has a similar lack of respect for the democratic process as Alan Branley. Mr Branley had the decency not to stand for any sub committees, Mr Potts stood, claimed every penny he could, but didn’t go to that many meetings. According to the Council’s own website, Mr Potts has cost the electorate thousands for the meetings he doesn’t go to; Mr Branley has cost them nothing.

    I settled in South Shields after completing my marine engineering degree, a result of your well esteemed College. I have always voted for the Branleys, and will continue to do so. The Conservatives have never knocked on my door, and they have never knocked on the door of my brothers take away business in East Boldon. Perhaps you ask Councillor Potts the same questions.

    • Raj,

      I will continue to attack those who I consider as poor representatives of their electorate and those lacking in political acumen and strategy in this town. If you are happy to be represented by someone who has a track record of NOT attending meetings (which then result in very costly by elections) then so be it, I am not here to preach to the converted.

      I note too that fantastic sums are being spent by the Alliance on leafleting with the aid of a distribution company in advance of the notice of election being published. These sums of course will not be included in the election expenses, how cute.

      I will repeat and remind, I am not a member of the Conservative Party, nor have I been a member of any political party for over twenty years now, therefore I am free to express my opinions without the discipline of a doctrine, I am not here to answer for Cllr. Potts, neither is he here about to answer to his electorate by way of an election following removal for non attendance.

      Oh, and I get unremittingly tired of hearing that the Branleys cost us nothing, if they feel that their income can afford them the ability to resist councillors allowances or expense claims fine, but please stop shoving it down other peoples’ throats. We’d like a good representative mix of people on the council so that it truly reflects the make up of the borough and the people that live here, we are not all uber rich from Westoe Village, and I doubt that we’d buy the Victorian age of noblesse oblige these days.

      Now, after that little diversion, can we hear what their town development strategies consist of, its a very relevant question to put to a political group?
