Miliband backs open primaries

with one comment

He obviously likes the idea used by Conservatives

However this does make you wonder if South Shields might now have a different Member of Parliament if we had enjoyed the benefits of an open primary at the time that Tony Blair “persuaded” David Clark to take a peerage to make way for David Miliband, doesn’t it? Bit of a shame that the Foreign Secretary is behind the curve on this one though.

I don’t necessarily believe that a system of open primaries would dilute the influence of party members, be they Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat or anyone else, so long as the party retains the ability to draw up the short list of candidates. The experiment in Totnes, although not cheap, showed that it is a popular method for deciding on a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, as many people took part in the all postal ballot as take part in many local government elections – no wonder the Tories are generally happy with the idea which strengthens the links between the party and the public and enhances our democracy at a time when political engagement needs strengthening.

  1. Do you not think also the Tories are on the way up and the members are happy vibrant and willing to work for the Party, while Labour are really at the lowest fighting to keep a leader perhaps a majority are worried about , and any method of voting for candidates would to some degree be worthless if nobody turns up, because labour are not going to get rid of the idea of Parachuting people into safe seat, and I’m sick of it
