Political engagement through Twitter

Just why do some politicians even bother?

Via Obnoxio the Clown

Twitter promised all sorts of things to those politicos who wished to stay in touch, it has convenience (no, nothing to do with the previous post), speed, and a light touch – something which Mr. Brown has always been in favour of. I follow quite a few Tweets from our politicians and it is becoming a more popular way for a small meeting of minds. However, one does sometime wonder about the intellectual capacity of those in government such as Kerry McCarthy MP, the Labour Member for Havana Central . Just check out her Parliamentary style in the Tweet at the bottom of this pile:

Kerry McCarthy Tweets

OK representative of some of the language used by some of her constituents, but hardly what you’d call engaging is it? Obo says Churchill might have been proud of it, I wonder, he was good at dishing out insults but always used good decent English such as this one about Stanley Baldwin:

“He occasionally stumbled over the truth, but hastily picked himself up and hurried on as if nothing had happened.”

Which rather reminds of the efforts to Tweet by one of our local councillors in South Tyneside, and another Churchill quotation:

“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire”

What galls most is the clear intention in the bio to be:

“the first in borough to use twitter to engage with local residents”

Yet the vast majority of this engagement consists of little more than a tirade of rants, personal abuse, and attacks upon the personalities of others, be they councillors or the Editor of the Shields Gazette, and he seems surprised that the Indies get such little news coverage?

I have seen very little evidence of engagement in his Twitter page, certainly nothing that could not be gleaned from the council’s own website, perhaps he’s been following and learning from the Member for Bristol east.
