Candidates for Westoe by election

Seven compete for South Tyneside Council seat

Sorry about the lateness, this will be my one and only blog post for today, I’ve had a hectic busy day and tomorrow starts early at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital (a longer stay there next week so the Corner Shop will be quiet from Wednesday). The seven candidates who have submitted nomination forms for the by election in the South Shields Westoe Ward of South Tyneside are as follows:

Allen Branley (Independent Alliance)
George Crozier (Progressive)
Anthony Dailly (Conservative)
Les Lovelock (BNP)
Bill Troupe (Lib-Dem)
Alan West (Labour)
David Wood (Independent)

Some surprises and disappointments in there – surprised and delighted that the Progressives have decided to field a candidate, I’ve met George Crozier a number of times and he’s a genuinely nice fellow) the divorce from the South Tyneside Independent Alliance is definitely final then. Surprised that there is a second Independent candidate and severely disappointed that the electors have been given the choice of voting for the BNP, but it is a democracy, I shouldn’t complain too much.

With my ear to the ground, the favourite will still be Allen Branley, I know that’s a bit bizarre considering that he’s been thrown off South Tyneside Council twice for non attendance at meetings, but he had a HUGE personal following, which will be somewhat reduced on a lower turnout but still significant. He must be pleased to be facing so many other candidates, it won’t do his chances any harm as the opposition vote in this ward becomes fragmented, so it is to be hoped that one single candidate from the other six rises to the challenge to run Mr. Branley close, or better still to run him out of town.

The by election will be on Thursday 10th. September, and we will all be watching with interest in these parts.

  2. Go for it Vicki! Do we have to concede at such an early hour. All indications are that Mr Branley has thrown his dummy down and is in a real pique. My interpretation is that the more candidates there are the more likely that Mr Branley will feel uncomfortable. Let us hope so anyway. Quite sure that the regulars at the local pubs have more idea than you anyway CURLY!!

There’s a challenge there for someone.

  4. You are all “speculating”, “guessing”, “hoping”, “dreading”. It’s a bit early for that so let us all wait until we are nearer to September 10th. Anybody who has expressed an opinion care to “run a book” to save us going down to Ladbroke’s or Coral? What are the odds?

  5. I don’t think the County or the Westoe can be viewed as good sounding boards of public opinion in the Westoe ward. The county draws its clientele from far and wide so I suspect a majority of its customers won’t even be registered to vote in the ward. Besides, if my memory serves me well the Branley’s objected to the County getting a late licence, so you would hardly expect them to be popular in there.

As for the Westoe, I suspect if Vicki went in on the Friday lunch time and asked how many people had actually voted, the percentage would be pretty low.

We’ll find out soon enough though!
