Public asked to spy on shopkeepers

Charge of the light bulb brigade!

Via Trixy

A Defra spokesman said: ”The public could tip off trading standards if they know someone to be illegally importing 100W or frosted light bulbs, just as they would if they found dangerous toys or appliances.

“Trading Standards could then follow the normal procedure to test the bulbs, find proof of date of purchase and could then challenge the importer through the courts. The enforcement of this new legislation is important to maintain fairness to honest retailers and importers and to protect consumers.”

Nigel Farrage, the leader of UKIP, said the public should not be encouraged to snoop.

“Under this Government we begin to resemble East Germany in the 1980s where we snoop and report on local businesses,” he said. “No doubt the next move will be to snoop on your parents if they continue to use old fashioned light bulbs.”

Nick Herbert, the Tory environment spokesman, said it was a waste of taxpayers’ money.

“People will be incandescent about such a waste of public money. At a time of economic gloom this proposal will create more heat than light.”

Good grief these damned politicians and bureaucrats really get up your bloody nose at times, as if we haven’t got bigger things to worry about than what sort of lightbulbs you can buy at the corner shop when when one pops off at 8:30 in the evening. On top of which people like DEFRA and the whole bloody EU have probably got a combined carbon footprint twice the size of the carbon saved by switching off old fashioned filament bulbs, have you ever considered how much carbon is emitted by MEPs as they jet from constituency to Brussels, Brussels to constituency, constituency to Strasbourg, Strasbourg to constituency, constituency to Brazil (another fact finding mission), Brazil to Brussels? The whole scenario is obnoxious in the extreme, and makes the EU another candidate for smaller government, in fact it’s a whole empire we could manage well enough without.

The greatest worry about the bureaucrats in the EU is that our Parliament cannot even make laws without reference to this leviathan soviet styled commissariat, I bet you thought that all we had to do was debate a Bill in the House of Commons, send it to the House of Lords, get the Sovereign to give it Royal Assent and hey presto, you’ve made a law? Oh no you haven’t, our own Parliament has to dutifully and properly inform their masters in the EU Commission of every Act that they put on the Statute Book before it is considered “legal”.

And now Miliband the Younger at DEFRA is dutifully bending the UK’s knee once again as he tries to persuade us all to snoop on behalf of the Euro superstate to find out which shopkeepers are planning on destroying the planet’s future with a dozen 60 watt pearl bc cap light bulbs, isn’t it pathetic? No wonder Trixy gets headaches about it all. But don’t worry, the new energy efficient fluorescent type bulb which we are all supposed to use is a perfectly safe replacement for a filament lamp, and Miliband’s team at DEFRA have all the information we need on how to change a broken bulb, they just don’t know how to change a broken system of government that relies on citizen spies at every street corner!

  1. RE Defra says: The public could tip off about light bulbs just as they would if they found dangerous toys or appliances.

Light bulbs have been safely used for 100+ years
We are NOT talking about lead paint here,
and light bulbs do NOT give out CO2 gas (like cars)

= power stations give out the emissions, power stations can of course be dealt with directly
(CO2 processing and/or energy substitution, as is already planned anyway).

Ironically the environmentally questionable CFL lights are the one being promoted – in another world, those mercury containing bulbs would be the ones banned!

For all reasons why banning bulbs is wrong,
and why the energy emission savings arguments don’t hold up,
and for the EU and industrial background politics behind the ban
