Cameron to ration ministerial posts!

David Cameron's HP sauce

Well after a few posts over the last few days calling for David Cameron to champion smaller government it appears as though he has taken heed of a number of commentators who believe that (whilst smaller government would be good for us) politicians ought to share the pain during a recession.

Andrew Porter and James Kirkup in The Daily Telegraph suggest that “Call me Dave” is about to go for a government of around 100 MPs and a reduced Cabinet of 20 (there are currently 32 members of the Shadow Cabinet).

If the Conservatives have a sizeable majority after the next election, a smaller government would be good for Parliament and our style of democracy, when more than 130 MPs are members of the government there are less left on the back benches to scrutinize, challenge, and question the executive, thus easing the passage of bad law. One might hope that a few extra back benchers will facilitate the passing of better drafted and better considered legislation, that is what we expect of Parliament.
