South Shields cleanest town in the country…

……as far as CO2 emissions go.

I’m sure I commented somewhere in the recent past, either here or elsewhere, that the Green Party ought to be pleased that we are in an economic recession because the reduction in industrial activity would produce surprisingly good CO2 emission figures. And sure enough:

According to the study, households in Camberley emit the largest amount of carbon at around 28.05 tonnes each.

The lowest carbon emitters in the UK were in South Shields in Tyne and Wear where households on average produced around 18.36 tonnes.

Of course, embarrassing though it is for some Tory councils in the south, we need to remember that with high levels of unemployment, a tradition of working almost on the door step with less commuting, lower car ownership, and a relatively clean Metro system to take us around Tyneside and Wearside, we should hardly expect South Shields folks to be fuelling the greenhouse gases that are apparently dooming the planet.

It is hardly a result of years of tough targets being met by our politicians is it?

  1. Yes, you have commented such on the Greens in the past Curly, but it was stupid then too.

Perhaps you’re actually guiltily projecting Tory joy that unemployment keeps wages down? At least toff boy Cameron’s school tie chums can buy more yachts and polo horses eh?

  2. Yachts, horses, what do they contribute to global CO2 emissions?
