Doncaster delegation in South Shields

with 3 comments

Just what could we learn from them?

Doncaster councillors took a tour of South Tyneside to check out regeneration plans for the Borough.

South Tyneside Council played host to the visiting delegation, who are all members of the South Yorkshire authority’s Economy and Enterprise Panel.

What an interesting group to be coming up here to learn something from us, I wonder if our councillors learned something from them, they do after all have a very interesting directly elected Mayor in Doncaster!

Peter Davies is creating a bit of a stir in Yorkshire with his spirit and zeal to cut the cost of local politics, the English Democrat cut the Mayor’s Salary from £73000 to £30000 on his arrival, and pledged to close the council’s newspaper for “peddling politics on the rates”. He also wanted to cut the number of councillors from 63 to 21, saving tax payers £800,000, he has withdrawn Doncaster from the Local Government Association and the Local Government Information Unit saving another £200,000. He also wants to break some of the links with Doncaster’s nine twin towns!

Of course like many new politicians who arrive in a Borough full of bright ideas and infectious zeal, when you put him under a bit of scrutiny you find he is just like………..well just like most other politicians really.

Remind you of anyone?

  1. Curly,
Peter Davies is going to save Doncaster millions in the long run. I think some of his commitments are excellent, and his pledge to cut the mayors salary from £73,000 to £30,000 is great. I genuinely think we need more Peter Davies in this country. Though I do not agree with his other commitments which do not seem to be well thought of.
Which Councillor from Shields does Peter remind you of? As I do not think there is anyone as radical and courageous as Peter Davies.

    • There may be not, but there are some who came to the game offering hope of new beginnings, a fresh start, whiter than white, as pure as the driven snow, with wonderful promises, and all that comes with them. They got their feet under the table and then behaved like……….like…. well seasoned politicians to be honest.

  2. I have alaways thought, does a politician become corrupt and decietful after he becomes an elected politician or before he gets elected. I conclude that before the election, some are genuinely whiter than white and promise what they genuinely believe, they promise their vision of utopia. However once elected, I believe the system, peer pressure and a lust for power makes them corrupt. Then there are some politicians who even before being elected are just plain greedy, decietful and power hungry, its just part vof their nature!!
