North East councils privatise legal services

Joint legal panel set up

Good to see in this so called hotbed of socialism in the north-east that privatisation and “outsourcing” is flourishing. It is to be hoped that the power of block buying will lead to discounts and significant cost savings, otherwise the legal professions will be laughing up their sleeves again.

Dickinson Dees, Eversheds, Pinsent Masons, Walker Morris and Ward Hadaway have all made it onto the roster.

They will advise primarily on commercial, regeneration and major projects work, including a Newcastle waste management project.

Head of commercial at Newcastle City Council John Softly said: “[The joint panel is intended] to provide expertise and capacity where we don’t have it in-house.

“The main reason was to achieve value for money in terms of our external spend through discounted rates from these providers.”

The member councils are Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Long gone are the days of council solicitors scouring over planning laws with a quill pen as local government looks for ways to cut its cloth!

  1. There is an interesting story behind one of the appointments to the panel. It involves intrigue, veiled threats in the local press and a piece of personal information.

  3. Curly, the panel is in addition to existing in-house legal services. There will be no cost saving on in-house legal costs.
