Tough decisions required from Labour’s South Tyneside cabinet

Refreshing to note that Labour in South Tyneside is facing up to the reality of reducing spending if they wish to continue attracting any sort of central government support (from whoever makes up the next central government) with all sorts of options being considered. With Alistair Darling and the Governor of the Bank of England both transmitting signals that overall spending plans have to be sharply cut back hastily to reassure markets that the massive budget deficit will be brought under control, it looks like “the brothers” in the north-east are starting to “get it”.

I was fascinated by this comment from Cllr. Ed Malcolm:

“Some community centres are well past their sell-by-date and some are under-used.

“We also need to question whether there is a need for libraries in every nook and cranny. We’re looking at the possibility of amalgamating them, putting some libraries in community centres.

Hurrah, hurrah, I thought a few years ago that they’d launched a plan to build a community centre on every street corner in the borough because they were sprouting up that fast! Rationalisation began some time ago when some of the smaller community centres started to find alternative uses, the Derby Street Centre for instance became an Arts Centre, and with the massive growth of satellite and cable television as well as broadband internet it is possible that many people now don’t see the need to leave the house to find their entertainment. Of course, I understand that some of the community centres offer a wide range of services and provide meeting facilities for local groups, and some even have licensed bars that have replaced the local pub! However an exercise to reduce and rationalise the numbers or find more alternative uses must be welcomed, even if some Labour councillors have to find other premises in which to hold their surgeries!
