When is a party not a party?

I’m feeling generous so I’ll donate them a new logo

Since making one or two posts asking challenging questions of the leadership of the South Tyneside Independent Alliance group of councillors they have gone into virtual overdrive on Twitter and at their own website launching a tirade of utter nonsense and garbage in my direction as they try and spin their way out of the self created mess resulting from the inept decisions to (a)bring another family member on board, and (b) fail to register themselves with The Electoral Commission.

Let us just recap how they have behaved and organised themselves over the last couple of years in South Tyneside. Their “movement” was spawned following the defection of Cllrs. Jane and Alan Branley from the local Labour Party and they added further disaffected hard left socialists to their ranks over the ensuing months, they were ostensibly independent and they formed an alliance with another non political group on South Tyneside Council. This “alliance” with the Progressive group resulted in an acrimonious divorce and they lost further members later, since then they have become more and more like any other political party as they sought to strengthen and protect their diminishing seats. They have a leader and a deputy leader, they all use the same common literature in the form of regular newsletters and election material, they hold regular meetings for “volunteers” and supporters, they have regular social and fund raising events, they have published a website, a dedicated Twitter site, and have a few other personal twitter pages too, it is claimed that some of their members are also responsible for the publication of one or two Twitter “attack” sites but this will always be denied. They ask for regular “voluntary” contributions from their councillors just as other parties do to help finance election campaigns, they campaign in teams around the borough moving from ward to ward, just like any other political party. They have regular “spokesperson” to whom the media can turn for quotes, just like any other political party, they move motions in council like any other political party. They have learned to develop the art of spin like any other party and are now using their Twitter pages to drum up support for regular meetings at The Old Ship in Sunderland Road, South Shields, which is where you need to go if you have any “awkward” questions that they don’t wish to answer publicly.

In fact in most respects their behaviour is just as one would expect from any political party, that is apart from one or two exceptions, and they are:

They are not registered with The Electoral Commission so we cannot look into their finances or see if they have their own version of a Lord Ashcroft in South Tyneside.

They have no policies, no manifesto, no real agenda for change, but a long record of resorting to personal attacks when they run out of ideas (even against a lone blogger who belongs to no political party at all – this friends is what I call crawling in the gutter and I wonder just who approves these attacks on members of the general public).

So the big question has to be just when is a party not a party?

When will they be big enough to instil some party discipline on some of their people, when will they decide to become more democratic in their selection processes, more open and honest over their funding, and when will they register with the Electoral Commission?

In response to their confused spinning this weekend, I offer them an official logo above, because really, they are no change at all from what we have seen in the past.

  1. One of their stalwarts Coun. George Waddle exposed their total lack of policies in a recent letter in The Gazette. He deplored suggestions that 3 council run care homes might close and suggested that money be cut from other parts of the budget. Well hello George. Aren’t you …errrr…on the Council. Did you make any suggestions where money could be saved either at the Council or at the recent meeting organised by Unison. No you did not. Sums the Independents up all mouth no action.

    • the election leaflets were paid for by allen Branley,

But he sought fit not to pay us for delivering 32,000

      flyers for his dentist .

I do not know who distributed or made the postcards but can confirm i had a visit from the police regarding them, im sure if we all think for a minute we could only speculate on a supporter of this group and maybe even now a candidate.
