Labour’s Lies

with 8 comments

For the sake of the dinosaurs in South Shields Labour Party who distribute David Miliband’s election leaflet containing the Brown/Whelan rhetoric I republish this in full from CCHQ

Labour lie #1: Conservatives would cut free bus passes for pensioners

  • “What we now have is a national concessionary fare scheme that gives pensioners the chance to travel the country; that would be at risk under a Conservative Government” (Gordon Brown, Hansard, 7 April 2010, Col. 962)
  • “Tory frontbencher Ken Clarke has confirmed that the Conservatives are looking at scrapping free … off peak travel for pensioners” (Norwich Today, 20 July 2009, p.2)
  • “The Tories are even threatening to do away with my free tv licence and the free bus pass”

(Labour Party Political Broadcast, May 2009 http://www.cameronsconservatives.co.uk/camerons-cuts-for-pensioners)

The Truth: Conservatives would keep free bus passes for pensioners

  • “So David Cameron’s Conservative Party will not cut pension credits or winter fuel payments or free TV licences and bus passes. The pension age changes we make mean David Cameron’s Conservative Party can afford a more generous state pension.” (George Osborne Speech, Saturday, February 27 2010)
  • “They are already telling the most appalling lies about Conservative policy towards the elderly. And let me be absolutely clear so they can not be in any doubt, a Conservative Government will keep the free television licence, will keep the winter fuel payments, will keep the free bus pass. And Gordon Brown if you’ve got a moral compass will you please dig it out from behind your sofa, have a look at it and tell your candidates to stop telling lies about Conservative policy” (David Cameron Speech, March 27 2010)
  • “You will keep the benefits you depend on. Don’t believe Labour’s lies that we will cut them or get rid of them. The Winter Fuel Allowance, pension credit, free bus travel and TV licences for over-75s – these will all stay” (David Cameron speech, April 18 2010)

Labour lie #2: Conservatives would scrap free TV licences for the over 75s

  • “Tory frontbencher Ken Clarke has confirmed that the Conservatives are looking at scrapping free TV licences” (Norwich Today, 20 July 2009, p.2)
  • “The Tories are even threatening to do away with my free tv licence and the free bus pass” (Labour Party Political Broadcast, May 2009 http://www.cameronsconservatives.co.uk/camerons-cuts-for-pensioners)
  • Gordon Brown’s own PPS John Trickett put out a leaflet saying: “If you are a pensioner you could lose your winter fuel allowance, free travel, eye tests, swimming, TV licence and passport… and your pension credit.” (January 2010)

The Truth: Conservatives would keep free TV licences for the over 75s

  • In his monthly press conference, David Cameron railed against claims made in Labour’s leaflets … “Their leaflets allege the Conservatives will get rid of TV licences for pensioners,” he said. “It is just complete and utter rubbish and they know it is rubbish.” (Channel 4 FactCheck, 29 June 2009)
  • Shadow Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt denied Labour’s claims: “We have said nothing on that at all and we have got no plans to change them,”(The Observer, 5 July 2009)
  • “We will preserve child benefit, winter fuel payments and free TV licenses. They are valued by millions” (George Osborne speech to Conservative Party Conference, 6 October 2009)

Labour lie #3: Conservatives would cut pensions and pension credit

  • “At a time of crisis, they say that there is nothing for pensions, nothing for child benefit, nothing for public services except cuts” (Gordon Brown, Hansard, 23 Mar 2009 Col. 26)
  • “Pension Credits … could … be at risk of Tory cuts” (Norwich Today, 20 July 2009, p.2)
  • “The Winter Fuel Allowance, Free Bus Fares, Free Eye Tests, Pension Credit. All introduced by the Labour Government. All at risk if a Tory Government gets back in.” (Leaflet from Phyllis Starkey, Labour MP for Milton Keynes South)
  • Gordon Brown’s own PPS John Trickett put out a leaflet saying: “If you are a pensioner you could lose your winter fuel allowance, free travel, eye tests, swimming, TV licence and passport… and your pension credit”

(January 2010)

The Truth: Conservatives would increase the value of the state pension by relinking it to earnings in 2012 and keep pension credit

  • “So David Cameron’s Conservative Party will not cut pension credits or winter fuel payments or free TV licenses and bus passes. The pension age changes we make mean David Cameron’s Conservative Party can afford a more generous state pension.” (George Osborne Speech, Saturday, February 27 2010)
  • “My Government will: increase the value of the basic state pension for all pensioners and help to stop the spread of the means test by linking pensions to earnings.” (David Cameron, Pensioners Pledge, 26 March 2010)
  • “You will keep the benefits you depend on. Don’t believe Labour’s lies that we will cut them or get rid of them. The Winter Fuel Allowance, pension credit, free bus travel and TV licences for over-75s – these will all stay (David Cameron speech, 18 April 2010)

Labour lie #4: Conservatives would cut the Winter Fuel Allowance

  • “David Cameron has refused to commit to maintaining child benefit and winter fuel allowances at the same level as the Labour Government”

(Labour Party Poster http://www2.labour.org.uk/austerity_for_who)

  • “The Winter Fuel Allowance, Free Bus Fares, Free Eye Tests, Pension Credit. All introduced by the Labour Government. All at risk if a Tory Government gets back in.” (Leaflet from Phyllis Starkey, Labour MP for Milton Keynes South)
  • “But much of this progress, not least your Winter Fuel Allowance, could all be at risk if the Tories win.” (Maria Eagle letter to constituents, 29 January 2010)

The Truth: Conservatives would keep the Winter Fuel Allowance

  • “We will preserve child benefit, winter fuel payments and free TV licences. They are valued by millions” (George Osborne speech to Conservative Party Conference, 6 October 2009)
  • “We will keep the winter fuel allowance. Let me take this opportunity to say very clearly to any pensioner… you know you are getting letters from the Labour Party that say the Conservatives would cut the winter fuel allowance, would cut the free bus travel, would cut the free television licence. These statements by Labour are quite simply lies. I don’t use the word ‘lie’ very often, but I am using it today because they are lies. A Conservative government would keep the winter fuel allowance, would keep the free television licence, would keep the money for pensioners.” (David Cameron Press Conference 23 March 2010, as reported in Daily Telegraph, 24 March 2010)
  • “You will keep the benefits you depend on. Don’t believe Labour’s lies that we will cut them or get rid of them. The Winter Fuel Allowance, pension credit, free bus travel and TV licences for over-75s – these will all stay” (David Cameron speech, 18 April 2010)

Labour Lie #5: Conservatives would cut free eye tests and free prescriptions

  • Gordon Brown’s own PPS John Trickett put out a leaflet saying: “If you are a pensioner you could lose your winter fuel allowance, free travel, eye tests, swimming, TV licence and passport… and your pension credit.” (January 2010)
  • “But I’ve got one or two problems with the other two manifestos of the other parties. David doesn’t seem to have mentioned free prescriptions for the elderly or free eye tests” (Gordon Brown, Second Leaders Debate, 22 April 2010)

The Truth: Conservative would keep free eye tests and free prescriptions

  • David Cameron said in response to the same accusation about eye tests and prescriptions at his March monthly press conference: “We will keep what we inherit in all these areas. All these things that Labour are saying are complete and utter lies, and they know it too” (David Cameron Monthly Press Conference, as reported in Daily Mail, 24 March 2010)
  • Last night David Cameron repeated this pledge to keep free eye tests – “Let me do it right now, we’ll keep them” (Second Leader’s Debate, 23 April 2010)

How can they willingly contribute to a campaign based on fears and smears, how does their good Geordie conscience allow them to be led by the nose in this fashion? Will they be good enough to withdraw Mr. Miliband’s leaflet and apologise to the electorate of the South Shields constituency, or are we expected to, once again, take it all at face value and be taken for granted?

(Mr. MIliband was frightening people in Gloucester and Bristol yesterday, Durham and Blaydon today, on top of his other journeys during the campaign.)

  1. Just typical of the Spin Meisters of ZaNu-Lab. They must be desparate to leaflet around various constituencies (even the Mr Brown’s own in Kirkaldy, so it has been alleged.

A Labour Party that is so full of bullsh*te, lies, yellow-bellied cowardice, does not deserve to even be voted for. But, the object of the exercise is to frighten Pensioners into not voting for the Conservatives. What despicable little morons those people are. We know who they are. The “Man in Flat Cap and Glasses”, and “He of that Dodgy Dossier” no doubt (alleged).

Absolulety depiscable. Mr Brown did state that he..”Had not authorised this..!” But would you believe him. After all, the ‘Buck stops with Brown!’.
Or, is it all Maggie Thatcher’s fault?

  2. I’ve had several calls this week from people in South Shields to say they were pretty disgusted with the lies in the leaflets. Labour are working against themselves. People are not listening or believing these lies. It’s desperation.
    Vote for Change!

  3. Are the Tories so clean themselves, though? All those stories about Clegg on the same day just a coincidence? And Cameron banging on about immigration figures as if the trend was still on the up and up.
They’re both as bad as each other.

  4. Still haven’t seen anything where Tories directly confirm they will not cut free prescriptions for pensioners. It just doesn’t get mentioned in the list of things they will keep.

    • Looks like you are needing an eye test yourself (free or otherwise) the confirmation was given by Cameron in his monthly press conference on 24th March and repeated in the second Leader’s Debate on 23rd April, as set out immediately above!

  5. Not to mention the lies about the violent crime figures.
No pensioners have phoned me but I have spoken to lots who are worried about their bus passes and winter fuel Payments being means tested away under the Tories.

    • The Truth: Conservatives would keep the Winter Fuel Allowance

      * “We will preserve child benefit, winter fuel payments and free TV licences. They are valued by millions” (George Osborne speech to Conservative Party Conference, 6 October 2009)
      * “We will keep the winter fuel allowance.
      * “You will keep the benefits you depend on. Don’t believe Labour’s lies that we will cut them or get rid of them. The Winter Fuel Allowance, pension credit, free bus travel and TV licences for over-75s – these will all stay” (David Cameron speech, 18 April 2010)

So I hope you told them the truth

Or is half the problem that some people simply don’t want to believe what they see, hear, or read?

      • Or maybe they know the Tories of old and don’t trust them.
