More “Brownies” from the 2nd. Leaders Debate

with 3 comments

Perhaps you might like to quiz Mr. Miliband about these tonight

On crooked MPs and the expenses scandal

Gordon Brown says: “What MPs did was completely unacceptable and no punishment is too great for them if they have to go before the courts and answer for their crimes”.

Contradiction: But Labour proposed a maximum sentence of 1 year for MPs who break the expenses rule. The usual penalty for fraud is 10 years.

Gordon Brown says: What they did was completely unacceptable and no punishment is too great for them if they have to go before the courts and answer for their crimes.

Hypocrisy: The Labour Party’s lawyers are representing the three Labour MPs on trial, and receiving public funding from legal aid.

On pensioners

Gordon Brown said: “we will help pensioners”

He’s promised it before: At he last election in 2005, Labour pledged: ‘All households expected to pay council tax that include anyone over 65 will receive £200 towards the cost of council tax’ (Labour manifesto). This payment was only for the general election year, and was cancelled by Gordon Brown after that (Hansard, 25 January 2010, Col. 574WA).

Gordon Brown said: “one thing that scandalises our society above all else is that we  cannot give dignity and security to all pensioners in retirement”

But experts have estimated that Brown’s pension tax raid took £100 billion out of Britain’s pensions

On GOATS (government of all the talents) and the “Big tent”

Gordon Brown said: “when I became Prime Minister … we brought people in from business”

Labour Failure: Most of them left including Stephen Carter and Digby Jones.

Gordon Brown said “I invited people who were business men and women to come into the government and work with us for national economic benefit and I will continue to ask people to give their talents to public service and that is something that’s really important to do.”

Since becoming Prime Minister and announcing his first Cabinet, Gordon Brown has lost five of the six ‘GOATS’ he brought in to help (Government of all Talents)

On immigration

Gordon Brown said : ‘Our policy is to control and manage immigration.’

Reality: Net migration is up threefold under Labour

The main contenders for the South Shields constituency will be debating the important issues and taking your questions tonight in St. Hilda’s church in the Market Place, South Shields at 7:30 pm.

  1. ‘All households expected to pay council tax that include anyone over 65 will receive £200 towards the cost of council tax’
Every pensioner(except those on pension credit) received the £200 whether they paid council tax or not.
My elderly neighbour, on full council tax benefit was very happy to receive this present from the tax payer.

  2. I notice that you have studiously avoided Cameron’s Paxo stuffing. Could this be because the Bullingdon Boy quite clearly said that, if elected,he would be targeting (along with N. Ireland) the North East for Government cuts. In other words if you are a nurse, care assistant, policeman, teacher, classroom assistant, communtiy warden etc living in South Shields don’t vote Tory because your job is on the line!

    • Sorry I haven’t commented, this is simply because I didn’t see the show nor read about it afterwards, I have had a particularly busy weekend dealing with emergency services.
Public sector jobs will be on the line in South Shields for sure, just as they will in Braintree, Glasgow, Totnes, Liverpool, and Sevenoaks, this is because we all know and appreciate that massive cuts in public spending are on the way regardless of who wins the election!
Mandelson has already admitted that the cuts will go deeper and further than anything Maggie Thatcher administered, just thought I’d remind you of that.
