Election night count in pictures

General Election count, South Shields 2010This is what the fuss was about!

I, like a number of people during the early hours of this morning was wondering exactly why the process of counting the votes and declaring the general election result in the South Shields constituency was taking so long. There seemed to be interminable gaps at some stages and some observers were wondering whether or not the announcement needed to be timed to suit the television schedules of Sky or the BBC – no seriously.

We shouldn’t take away any credit for the extremely stressful and highly concentrated type of work that the counters do, we are not like America where electronic voting and counting takes place, everything is done by hand, checked, and double checked, until all of the parties and officials are satisfied that a fair result has been reached. It may have taken a while but the counters at the Temple Park Leisure Centre did a good accurate job.

However that is not the point of this post, I have stated in an earlier post that someone at last night’s count made some sort of official complaint about me using my camera to record the event, on the grounds that I was not an accredited media representative. My guess is that the complaint came from a small sour faced crowd sat sullenly in one of the corners of the hall (just a wild guess you understand). The result was a visit from South Tyneside’s chief of the Press Office and another senior officer pointing out to me in the most embarrassed manner that they had received a complaint, I have to say I felt very sorry for them to be put into such an awkward position. Luckily for everyone I was on the point of departing anyway, but I did point out that my pictures would be little different from any others taken in the hall and that many people had photographed the official announcement of the result on their mobile phones.

So, just so we are all clear, here is my record of the night in pictures. If you really think that any of these are in any way objectionable please speak up and let us know why.

I have not watermarked these as I do with many of my others, so if you decide to use them elsewhere it would be nice if you could ask my permission first and provide link back to this post if possible.

Which one of these local politicos do you think might be most likely to be the complainant?

    • So sorry Mark,
we could always arrange a private sitting for an extra large fee, say 100 X the National Minimum Wage per hour (evil Tory trickster ha ha!) Could do you a good election photo for the next outing perhaps?

    • Perhaps, who knows?
Could it have been someone with a larger than life frame who was a bit jealous that they didn’t have their own camera with them? I’ll leave you to ponder that one.
