Miliband helps Abbott onto ticket

david milibandSouth Shields MP nominates left wing candidate

I find it rather odd that the South Shields MP, who is still favourite to win the Labour leadership battle, should nominate left wing rival Dianne Abbott to help promote a “broader contest”

Michael Levy speculates that his move may backfire:

Will his “altruism” be rewarded by the voters in the leadership election, or will his opponents rally to penalize his condescension as tokenism at its worst?

Paul Waugh provides a detailed account of David Miliband’s machinations and movements to ensure that the left winger entered the contest and revealed that Miliband’s “fixer” is the hapless Phil Woolas, who fell foul of Joanna Lumley during the campaign for Gurkha rights. He also asks if the South Shields MP will live to regret his decision.

Perhaps he is attempting to shift votes away from Ed Balls, but one can imagine that Dianne Abbott will be the first to fall away at the first hurdle. My own view is that the main beneficiary may well be Miliband’s younger brother Ed.

An odd tactic at this stage, we will have to wait and see how it plays out.
