  1. There were some disturbing scenes on our TVs recently, reminders of the Thatcher years spring to mind. One cannot condone violent behaviour but clearly parents who have boys and girls who may wish to attend further and higher educatiion will have to dig deep into their pockets. Many people with Tyneside flats bought in the 1980s would have had mortgages of circa £16,000 now their children will inherit at least £27,000 mortgages as soon as they earn £21k – worrying times indeed! Those less wealthy amongst us should worry.

    • What is required is an apolitical objective analysis showing the financial implications and costs for a cross section of students and comparing that to what those same students would have had to pay under the system introduced by the last government; like those published by the press the day after the Annual Budget is announced. What concerns me is that, if the public sector freezes recruitment, salaries and training budgets where are the next generation of frontline professionals and then managers in Local Government,Police, Fire Service etc going to come from?

      • The answer as to where they will come from, and I agree this is public fear, it may not be fact, (it should be better researched) is the rich. I said in an earlier comment that if unemployment goes down once the Condems have been in long enough for their policies to have an effect, social mobility improves, people have a feel good factor, crime continues its large downward swing, then I will take my hat off to the Condems and eat my words.
