Say NO to AV

I know I’ve already made one post on this matter, but I really do believe we inherently like our current system of electing MPs for South Shields, Jarrow or anywhere else for that matter, it is simple, easy to understand, easy to operate and has worked well for hundreds of years.

Here are a couple of videos to help simplify the understanding, please vote NO to AV on May 5th.

  1. Amazing how this issue unites politicians who would otherwise be poles apart. I find myself in agreement with the Baroness’ opinions voiced on the latest edition of “Any Questions”, a first!

  2. What a damaging,at times vindictive, and pointless campaign at a time when the ConDem Govt should be totally focused upon Libya, surely a “war” too far, and numerous high priority domestic issues. If we are AV’d, what if a high proportion of voters still vote for one candidate.

    • I have to agree, but it was one of the very first concessions made in formulating the coalition agreement. Unfortunately Cameron is seen to be keeping his promises to the Lib-Dems.

  3. If the campaigners had presented the facts, along with opinions plus verifiable pro and con quotes from voters who live in countries where AV is the electoral system and minus the jibes and alegations no problem. But it would have been advisable to defer this referendum until the next General Election.

    • I think Clegg and Co. had him over a barrel with this one, and it had to be held within the first year of the Parliament.

  4. I agree, I am talking in hypothetical terms only. On a lighter note bet you are relishing the electoral toil and trail in this warm sunny weather. See our “liberated conservative” is vacationing again, it’s a hard life in “virtual reality”; I hear the weather in San Mateo is almost as good a that in San Shields…

    • Cannot disagree that the weather is very agreeable!
However, this is most certainly a younger man’s task, my little old legs are starting to feel the strain.
San Mateo, is that in West Yorkshire?

  5. Tis in Calfornia, the sunshine state, where the legal pursuit of that elusive marsupial is taking place courtesy of their Superior Court, do you know the road to San Mateo?

  6. Sadly California, like so many places is now potentially even more unsafe with AQ no doubt hell bent upon launching a spectacular reprisal somewhere in the Western World. AQ rather than AV is now a priority. How many times have we heard those hollow sounding words “The World is now a safer place”…

    • Indeed worrying times and we will never be safe whilst others have evil intentions. My greatest worry was, and still is our own attitudes to those who follow Islam in this country, just because one follows a certain faith does not make the believer a terrorist. Just because a man has olive or brown skin does not make him a threat. Just because a man or woman dresses differently to me does not mean that I should be in fear. Just because someone carries the name Mohamed or Yusuf etc. should not make him a target for the intelligence services.

Ever since the spawning of Al Qaeda influenced terror, Britain and the USA have taken a collective nasty turn against the civil liberties of our own people, something else which did not “make the world a safer place”.

  7. Lisa French of North Tyneside exhibits a political nous and choice of words that puts Cam Clegg and Hague to shame; see today’s “Journal” pp 6/7.
