Heart breaking tragedy for South Tyneside councillors

Just as we witnessed a host of Labour councillors being announced by the Returning Officer at the Temple Park Centre in South Shields early yesterday morning, it became painfully apparent that their celebrations were dulled and muted, this was no political consequence but a human reaction to pain and sorrow as news of tragedy had recently been received .

I wish to share my deepest sympathy and send out my heartfelt thoughts to Cllr.Joan Meeks on the tragic and untimely loss of her 49 year old daughter, I have known Joan for many years and she is the most lovely woman, we would often bump into each other during the warm summer months with our respective families on our broad sandy beaches. A mother’s love should never have to be so tested in circumstances such as this, Joan and her husband Cllr.  Arthur Meeks deserve our fullest support as a community as she comes to terms with her terrible loss and they extend their loving arms around their grandchildren.

My prayers are with you both.
