I have no problem with Cllr. Branley’s allowances…..

with 17 comments

….so long as she tells the people of Westoe ward about them.

So after years and years of not claiming any allowance for giving up her time to serve as a South Tyneside District councillor Jane Branley has decided to join the majority of our other councillors in claiming what local government entitles her to. I have no problem with that at all, being an elected councillor, for most people, is an onerous task with responsibilities and duties which are time consuming, and unless we want purely voluntary councillors then we had better be prepared to go back to the days when only those of independent means could afford to give up their time to serve on the council. Rest assured, there are not that many people in South Tyneside who could afford to do that, and if we want our councillors to be fully representative of the people that elect them then they would have to include many who are employed, unemployed, housewives, retired people, and younger people, the allowance is there in recognition that being a local councillor these days is pretty much a full time job and without it many suitable people simply would not be interested in serving their community.

Having said that, the vast majority of councillors in South Tyneside are now earning on average around £12000 pa (taxable), we seem to have a lot of people with “special responsibilities”.

Update 20:32

I have just learned this evening, with some shock, that Jane Branley is suffering a terminal illness, and therefore I have scrubbed the majority of the above post. It would not be right, and totally lacking in compassion to add further pressure to her or her family at this time. I certainly do not expect nor wish her to respond or to make the statement that I have called for, she now deserves time for herself and her medical treament.

I offer my sincere apologies to Jane and her family if this post has seemed insensitive or caused offence, it certainly was not meant and would not have been made at all if I was aware earlier of her current plight. I wish her well, she has a huge majority and is extremely well respected in her ward, let us offer our prayers.

  1. Good post Curly, and fair comment given the electoral capital Mrs Branley gained from her earlier ‘principled’ pre-election stance.

I know it would have come out anyway, but props to David Potts for bringing this into the daylight.

  3. I knew Alan is a complete tool, but Mrs Branley (I thought) was genuine and principled.

It just puts another nail in my faith in the way local politics works. Are there other models of local administration used elsewhere which work better than the model we have now?

    • I don’t think there is, and it seems that Allen Branley is the only one not claiming, but thats OK as he hardly ever turns up for meetings still. What good is he for westoe or any where else?

  4. Sadly Curly Jane’s current desperately ill disposition may well preclude her from making any statement to the Gazette.
One can only speculate as to her current needs.

  5. She can’t be that ill. She was reading the riot act to Martin Swales’s office yesterday in a strongly worded email. She demanded a full investigation into how I got hold of this data. So it’s okay for JB to slag all of us off, but when she is shown up, it’s a disgraaaaaaaace!? The woman is a coward and a hypocrite who lied to her electorate over many years.

    • David, your capacity for self destruction and insensitivity is astounding, at times I wish you had followed your own advice:

“It will come as no surprise to many of you that I am a recovering alcoholic. I recognise that public life is of no benefit to my recovery, and in turn I am of no benefit to public life. I must step aside.

      • What is even sadder are the supportive comments which follow the publication of that “Northern Echo” story, anyone can make a throwaway disparaging comment or label someone, that is not debate, or satire, it is schoolyard name calling. Read an account of the “Liberace” libel trial for an example of how even someone who was regarded as a talented wordsmith, namely “Cassandra” of the “Daily Mirror” landed himself and the newspaper in legal hot water. Perhaps “Curly” can enlighten us as to the legal basis for a Councillor claiming allowances in the situation as alleged.

    • Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall.

  6. This comment from Potts is an absolute disgrace. If it is claimed that someone is suffering from a terminal illness, it generally means that you are looking death in the face. Although I don’t know her, nor have I ever had any dealings with her, I join with Curly in wishing her well and will certainly be praying for her and her family. This slagging off by Potts is undeseved, unneccesary unhelpful and shows a lack of compassion. I once again look at the time of his post and wonder whether, perhaps, he’d had a skinful beforehand. As for being a cowatrd, a hypocrite and a liar, Potts needs to lok in the mirror. Has he not been exactly the same with the electorate? Why did he not resign and seek er-election as an independent when he left the Conservatives?

    • Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

  7. If it is the case that this lady is indeed unwell then I wholeheartedly apologise. Alas, I had no way of knowing that other than unconfirmed rumours on your site. You will forgive me for not believing everything I read on blogs. I wish her well.

  8. from the Holy Bible ;

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you (Matthew 7:12).”

“Give, and it shall be given to you. For whatever measure you deal out to others, it will be dealt to you in return.

  11. Both tweeters involved in alleged “dangerous tackle” territory, one in respect of controversial events at the RWC, the other attempting to spear tackle a respected political opponent. As an occasional visitor to C and EB I am aware of current traffic flow and obstructive parking issues, and would say that the last thing that area needs is l developments that could dramatically increase traffic levels. Furthermore, any owner of property should ensure that it is maintained and kept neat and tidy looking, and one would applaud any local politician, whatever their political colour who spoke up about issues such as parking, traffic flows and speeds, as well as the maintenance of a clean and tidy environment.
