A statement from Cllr. David Potts – Bunga Bunga?

with 32 comments

UKIP Cleadon and East Village councillor invited constituent to “social gatherings”

I have today been contacted by the Gazette asking if I invited a constituent to a “bunga bunga” party.

Whilst I admit that I did do so, I was entirely unaware of the potentially negative connotations the phrase may hold. It is a term used regularly in my company to refer to casual social gatherings. Not sex parties as has been alleged.

I will not use the term again as clearly some misunderstand its meaning.

  1. I think our David is being a bit economical with the truth here.. On 10th May on his twitter he discusses internet porn.. “Never really been into porn, prefer the real thing. W&S party Saturday night”. He then describes it as “Basically it’s a naked party with lots of “activity””.

In days previous to the 10th, he described how the W&S Party he’d attended recently had left him with a sore backside.

The “casual social gatherings” David attends are clearly VERY casual.

    • Sorry, it was on May 13th. He was talking to @adultplayparlor about the W&S party he had attended on the night before.

  3. I don’t believe Potts excuse for a minute. The context of the tweets were clear, and anyone who has followed European politics will know the meaning of the term after Berlusconi’s antics.

I thought there was a chance that Potts could start afresh after recent problems, but given the disrespect shown to a resident like this it seems he is as arrogant and rude as ever.

  4. Just as I’m about to give young Mr Potts the benefit of the doubt he shoots himself in the foot again…or woukd that be his arse???

    May 17, 2012 at 2:13 pm

  5. For clarity, I am not “rude” or “arrogant”. My Twitter account is mostly used for business purposes, rather than political ones. I have never, would never, and will never engage in such parties. I understand that the term I used was easy to misrepresent.

    • Any comment on your conversation with @adultplayparlor? Or the “Basically it’s a naked party with lots of “activity”” tweet?

Seems to contradict your “I was entirely unaware of the potentially negative connotations the phrase may hold” statement… I think your constituent is owed an apology.

      May 17, 2012 at 6:10 pm

    • Is this the same twitter account which had the profile description of

“British foreign exchange trader & proud UKIP Councillor.”?

I’m guessing you know Healey’s First law on holes: “when you’re in one, stop digging!”

      Time to stop digging.

  6. I think I have made my position entirely clear. When I use the term “activity” I refer to swimming, spa treatments etc.

    David Potts

    May 17, 2012 at 6:26 pm

    • And the “thrashing” with the “buckle end” that left you so sore that you couldn’t sit down? What spa treatment is that?

      May 17, 2012 at 6:53 pm

  7. That was just a joke.

    David Potts

    May 17, 2012 at 7:06 pm

    • I wonder do your constituents appreciate such jokes when they are asking for your help..

I also wonder how Jeff Milburn feels about you asking a porn star to send him a message of congratulations.

The shame of it all is that if you had released a statement like : –

“I have today been contacted by the Gazette asking if I invited a constituent to a “bunga bunga” party. I admit that I did make this inappropriate, light-hearted comment to my constituent during a twitter conversation. At the time, perhaps in a moment of bravado, I felt it was appropriate. For the record, I would never entertain the notion of insulting a constituent in that way. I now regret that and would like to apologise for the offence I no doubt caused.”

-: then you might emerge from this with some credibility.

In the absence of that kind of statement, you now look like an arrogant bully with no regard for the position of Councillor or for the constituents you are elected to represent. Your denial of knowing what the term “bunga bunga” meant is, quite simply, incredible. You frequently comment on Dominique Strauss-Kahn and the perceived injustices he is facing. To suggest that you are not familiar with the term “bunga bunga”, in spite of your in depth knowledge of European politics (given it’s direct impact on your profession), beggars belief and makes you look dishonest, at best. Stupid, at worst.

I am not sure sure that it is anyone’s business if you do attend these kinds of parties. As you say yourself in many of your tweets, what people do in their private time is their own business. I would agree. However, you crossed the line of good taste and propriety in the conversation with Mr Gleeson and, for that, you should apologise.

      May 17, 2012 at 7:20 pm

  8. Ian. The term “Bunga Bunga” has many meanings.

    David Potts

    May 17, 2012 at 7:28 pm

    • Perhaps it does, I’m not so sure. The only time I learned of the phrase was when the Italian PM was reported to attend “bunga bunga” sex parties. Tell me, what are the other meanings of “bunga bunga” that would have made sense in the context of your tweet?

However, your invite was to a “W&S” party. When asked for clarification you said: “I can’t say on here. Basically, bunga bunga.”

Your other tweets suggest that a “W&S” party (wives and swingers?) involves nakedness, whipping, flogging etc. This seems to tie in with the sex-party suggestion.

Now, if it was a simple social gathering (where sometimes nakedness happens, as per your tweets) why were you not able to say so at the time? Why the implied secrecy?

      May 17, 2012 at 7:38 pm

  9. W&S stands for “wine&sandwiches”

  12. LLB has frequently warned others of the dangers of such tweeting. He also warned of the legal and ethical connotations of such use. Yet we still have local councillors who show a total lack of tact or for that matter common sense. I also note from what Curly posts Potts is another who blatantly constantly criticises our public servants. He is as always showing himself for what he is. One never hears him standing up for the common man or supporting the town! I’m sure the electorate will remember this.
By the way, LLB if you ever read this anymore what about the state of Prince Georg Square? It would be good to meet up and discuss what to do! I’ll keep my eye on this blog for the next few days.

  13. Message appreciated;but this is a “one off”. I felt that I was repeating myself to no avail, so semi- retired in order to focus upon research.PG Square still enjoys my company, at least the excellent and committed staff are still available. Hopefully our paths will cross, who knows, we may even get the chance to see a couple of defamation specialist QCs in action.

  14. From tonight’s Gazzette, “The Empire Srikes Back”

    Published on Friday 18 May 2012 13:59

A CONTROVERSIAL councillor who said South Tyneside had a ‘poxy backwater council’ has been branded a ‘vindictive bully’ by furious Town Hall bosses.

And today there are fresh calls for Coun David Potts to resign after his latest tirade on social network site Twitter.

The UKIP representative for Cleadon and East Boldon will face the standards committee – an independent council watchdog – after he received a criminal caution for unauthorised disclosure of personal data.

He took documents from a behind closed doors Town Hall meeting and handed them to the Gazette earlier this year.

The authority said Coun Potts’s attacks were “the latest in a series of vindictive attempts to bully and harass the officials who had to report his highly destructive and irresponsible behaviour to the police”.

The 29-year-old directed the tweets – sent on Monday night – to a constituent who, the Gazette understands, was arranging a meeting with him over traffic issues.

Now local authority leader, Coun Iain Malcolm, insists Coun Potts, who has previously spoken publicly of stepping down, should resign.

He told the Gazette: “Coun Potts is an extremely intelligent young man and, when he applies himself, a worthy opponent in debate.

“But to describe South Tyneside, and by inclination the area he represents on the council, as a “poxy backwater” is demeaning and offensive.

“There are enough ill-informed commentators from the South with a negative view of the North East. We don’t need elected councillors reinforcing the false stereotype.

“It is becoming a regular occurrence for Coun Potts to offend as many people as possible.

“Either he genuinely believes the nonsense he writes or he is writing in a tired, emotional state.

“Either way, I believe he must now honour his previous public statement and resign.”

A statement issued by South Tyneside Council read: “A recent police investigation resulted in Coun Potts receiving a formal criminal caution relating to dangerous and inappropriate behaviour in his role as a councillor.

“The council’s standards committee has ordered an investigation to consider the serious allegations against Coun Potts. The investigator’s report will be considered by the committee.

“It is clear Coun Potts’s recent comments are the latest in a series of vindictive attempts to bully and harass the officials who had to report his highly destructive and irresponsible behaviour to the police.

“It is especially worrying that, as a serving elected member of the council, Coun Potts has chosen to denigrate South Tyneside by describing it as ‘a poxy backwater’.

“Both the council and residents are very proud of South Tyneside and expect the highest standards of elected councillors.

“In the event of inappropriate behaviour, it is our responsibility to take whatever steps are necessary to prevent councillors from behaving in such a way, and sadly this can expose officials to personal attacks.

“Council officers do not have powers to discipline councillors, but our residents rightly expect standards to be upheld and inappropriate behaviour to be tackled if it arises.”

During his latest Twitter exchange, Coun Potts also appeared to invite a member of the public to a W&S party – an acronym used for wives and swingers – and used the phrase ‘bunga bunga’ – Italian for describing orgies.

He made derogatory references toward council chief executive Martin Swales in the online exchange.

When the Gazette contacted Coun Potts over his behaviour, he stressed he “loved South Tyneside dearly” and that his ‘poxy backwater’ comment was targeted at the local authority and not the borough.

He also insisted a W&S party referred to a ‘wine and sandwiches’ event.

He added: “I did not invite a constituent to any kind of inappropriate party. A W&S party stands for a “wine and sandwiches” party.

“‘Bunga bunga’ is a slang term I believe was invented by Colonel Gaddafi.

“My understanding is that it is merely a social gathering. The phrase is used among my circle. I may have misunderstood its perceived meaning.”

    • Hilarious.

So, Curly and Potts are the only followers of politics who were oblivious to bunga bunga parties.

Tories ain’t what they used to be. Alan Clark must be spinning in his grave.

      • Brian, I’m surprised that it is only you who failed to see through my blatant tongue in cheek comment, like yourself and most others I am very aware of the common connotation of the term “bunga bunga”! I gave Cllr. Potts the opportunity to publish his statement here and left it for others to comment on its worthiness – simples.
May I add, echoing Kevin’s remarks, that I have often criticised one or two of our councillors for making repeated attacks on public servants who are in NO position to defend themselves. It is NOT their role to create policy, they are only there to administer the decisions of the ruling group. I have always felt it reprehensible to enter into such personal attacks on paid public servants. Criticise policy by all means but never the paid servants of South Tyneside Council. I will never deviate from this viewpoint.

  15. More “bungled, bungled”; sad for STC, desperately trying to positively promote the area, because this “story” may make the Nationals. Wikipedia explains “bunga, bunga” adequately enough.
