Newcastle noisiest place in Britain?

Look after your ears!

A survey published yesterday claims that Newcastle-upon-Tyne is the noisiest place in Great Britain when it comes to traffic generated noise pollution, it’s even noisier than Birmingham, Manchester, and London!

Professor Deepak Prasher took a “snapshot” survey of noise levels in various cities on behalf of the Ear Institute at University College London in conjunction with hearing aid manufacturer Widex (there just had to be a commercial interest somewhere), and in Newcastle the readings were taken in the underpass of the A167M just after the Tyne Bridge – I don’t suppose any readings were taken in London’s Blackwall Tunnel then!

A council spokeswoman said:

“We are very cross – to say Newcastle is the noisiest place in the UK is just crazy and it really sends out the wrong image.”

She added: “The survey measurement was carried out at rush hour beside the underpass on the Central Motorway before reaching the Tyne Bridge – a location which is hardly typical of the noise levels found in the rest of the city and not a pedestrian or residential area.

“The survey is misleading to say that this one isolated and atypical reading makes Newcastle the noisiest place in Britain.”

Curly (being Mackem mad) only supposes that the council spokeswoman’s indignation is well placed, as he tries his best not to visit the home town of the “Darkside” either for shopping, or leisure, or business, even if having to visit Newcastle’s International Airport I will drive along the A1 to avoid their city centre or take the Metro in order to pass underneath it all – well you would wouldn’t you!

Look after your ears – stay away from Sid James Park!
